MYSORE – REME INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2011 – KARNATAKA STATE OPEN UNIVERSITY

It’s a time to work on bringing industries and institutions closer which enhances management capability efficiency and productivity. The Department of Management and Commerce of KSOU is putting a sincere effort to create awareness in the minds of teachers, researchers, scholars, professionals and industrialist by organising an international conference on re-engineering process in management education. The Dept of Management, KSOU Mysore invites the persons, institutions and Universities across the places.

About ICREME : The emerging Indian Economy is demanding professionals to administer business these days. Acquiring an MBA degree is the trend that is flourishing from 15 years. Today there are 1250 B schools, 506 Universities, 14 Open Universities and 29,860 colleges that providing management education in India. Around 1, 25,000 regular students and around 1 lakh students are getting their MBA degree through distance mode every year. 2 years course with various specializations and 1 year executive MBA courses are very much popular. The management education must provide the subject knowledge, practical exposure to the industrial environment and an opportunity to apply the concepts in to practice (through projects) along with personality development trainings. But there is a mismatch between industry demand and knowledge imparted by management institutions. The quality of education rendered by these institutions varies a lot. On one hand we have IIM at par with foreign prestigious institutions whose final year student would have placement and on the other hand we have institutions which charge exorbitant fees without any value addition to the students.

The management education however is experiencing a recession these days following economic recession. Consequently the dreams of management graduates are being shattered. In an endeavor to reengineering the management education, the conference assumes greater importance. The Department of Management and commerce of KSOU is putting a sincere effort to create awareness in the minds of teachers, researchers, scholars, professionals and industrialist about the reengineering process in management education. This effort will be made by conducting two day’s international conference by inviting the said persons across the country and from other countries.

Petition against IIMs filed by CAT toppers

New Delhi: A writ petition by over 70 Common Admission Test (CAT) toppers was filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday for seeking a stay on the second phase of the admission procedure of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

Most of the students who have filed the petition are among the 1% top CAT scorers but have not received a call for admission from the IIMs due to pre-test criteria that had been kept hidden by the prestigious b-schools till the result for CAT-2010 was announced on January 12.

The eligibility criteria for admissions have been changed by three IIMs after CAT-2010. Also, five other IIMs had decided to give weightage to Class X, XII and undergraduate marks. These changes in the admission procedure had been revealed only after the CAT-2010 results were announ.

Jamia is minority institution, rules commission

New Delhi: Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia university was on Tuesday granted "minority institution" status by National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI), giving the institution right to reserve up to 50 percent of its seats for Muslims, annulling all other reservations.

"We hold that the Jamia Millia Islamia is a minority education institution," ruled the three-member quasi-judicial body of the commission headed by Justice M.S.A. Siddiqi. The other two members of the body were Mohinder Singh and Cyriac Thomas.

Observing that the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a minority education institution founded by the Muslims for the benefit of community, the commission said there was no reason for not giving it a minority institution status.

"We have no hesitation in holding that the Jamia was founded by the Muslims for the benefit of Muslims and it never lost its character as a Muslim education institution," it said.

"Jamia was established with the purpose of keeping Muslim education in Muslim hands entirely free from external control. The history leads to one conclusion that JMI was established by Muslims, for Muslims, though non-Muslims could be admitted," the judgment observed.

The judgment has put to end the almost five-year-long case on a petition filed by Jamia Students Union, Jamia Old Boys Association and Jamia Teachers Association in 2006 contending the institution was a minority institution and not obliged to implement any other quota following the government decision to implement 27 percent reservation for other backward classes (OBSs) in the university.

The Confederation of Muslim Education Institutions of India was an intervening party while the vice chancellor of the university, the human resource development ministry and minority affairs ministry were the respondents.

"Government was trying to impose reservation on Jamia. Article 15 (5) of Indian constitution says that there cannot be any reservation in minority institutions. And Jamia is a minority institution as defined by the Article 30 which gives minorities right to establish minority institutions," Amber Qamaruddin, the lawyer representing the case on behalf of Confederation of Muslim Education Institutions of India, told the sources.

"It opens a way for establishing more minority institutions for Muslims without the fear that they may not be minority institution later. It will help in educating Muslims and bringing them in mainstream," Jamia Minority Status Co-ordination Committee convener Illyas Mallik said. IANS

JMI delays semester system by a year

New Delhi: Having witnessed the chaos that had been caused by the introduction of the semester system for undergraduate science courses at the Delhi University, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has delayed introducing the semester system at the varsity by a year.

The semester system at JMI had earlier been planned to be introduced commencing from the 2011-12 academic session.

According to the varsity, the semester system has been delayed because teachers still need time to restructure and revise the courses.

Media coordinator at JMI Simi Malhotra said that the Master's, M.Phil. and Ph.D courses had been revised last year and the whole procedure had been very time-consuming. "The number of courses at the undergraduate level are a lot and we need to restructure them all properly," she said.

Authorities at the university have also said that it would be wiser to wait another year before the semester system is implemented at the varsity. JMI Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung said that it has been a year since the semester system had been introduced for the Master's level courses at the varsity.

"We concluded after a review that we still required another year to implement the semester system at the undergraduate level at the university so that the transition is smooth," he said.

PM lays foundation stone for new NID campus in Assam

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed the gathering at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the National Institute of Design (NID) at Jorhat Campus in Assam today.

Expressing his happiness at laying the foundation stone of the institute, the Prime Minister said that this was the second institute of its kind in India after the first National Institute of Design had been set up in Ahmedabad fifty years ago.

"The need for design intervention for Indian products and services was first visualized by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He actively encouraged the setting up of the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad. Starting from a small campus in 1961, the institute today is a multiple campus organization with a strong national and international profile," he said.

"It conducts graduate level diploma programs in eight design disciplines and sixteen sector specific post graduate programs in diverse domains. It has also set up state of the art infrastructural facilities like the Knowledge Management Centre, Information Technology Center, and Design Vision Center."

Manmohan Singh stated that the new NID at Jorhat is a timely and welcome initiative. "The National Institute of Design has evolved as the touchstone of good design education in India while continuing its efforts for spreading knowledge of traditional Indian design across the world. But one institute cannot serve the growing and variegated needs of our nation," he said.

The Prime Minister said that he was happy that the institute had been set up in Assam, a state with which he had a special bond. "I represent Assam in Parliament and to me coming here is like coming home," he said.

He also informed that the government had always been alive to the special needs of Assam and other north east states and a number of projects for rapid development of Assam had been initiated.

He stated that he was happy to note that the comprehensive project for protecting the Rohmoria area and the Majuli Island from erosion is to be completed soon.

The Prime Minister stated, "It is design that converts creative ideas into tangible products and services for society at large. It can play an important role in economic, societal and industrial development. Its importance in creating opportunity for economic development and providing jobs is to be emphasized."

He said that the aim of good design should be the improvement in the quality of life through products and services which can be accessed by people in general. "In the Indian context design should also be a tool for inclusive development. Value addition through innovation in design can play a pivotal role in enhancing the competitiveness of both manufacturing and service industries," he said.

He further added that "Specific to the North East, better industrial product design can contribute to the development of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises by enhancing product utility and by helping in translating new ideas into new products."

Stating that design had been a traditional skill in India, Manmohan Singh said, "It gives a unique Indian aesthetic value to our arts and crafts as well as our festivals and historical monuments. However, in the process of rapid industrialization, some of our traditional skills have been lost. But, with the opening up of our country to global competition, the traditional design skills are once again finding a central role in differentiating our products. Indeed this could provide a competitive advantage to our producers."

"Therefore, our design initiatives should sustain and strengthen our traditional knowledge, skills and capabilities while also being sensitive to global demands and requirements," he inferred.

He informed that the government had taken significant initiatives to enhance the design innovation and application framework cutting across all sectors and disciplines, including revamping the Designs Act and setting up Design Business Incubators.

He hoped that the steps that had been taken by the government would ensure that the rights of creative people are protected and talented people are trained in innovative processes and lead to the creation of intellectual wealth.

Towards the end of his speech, the Prime Minister stated that the NID at Jorhat should leverage on the traditional craftsmanship of the region and help in giving a new life to the traditional arts and crafts in this area. "At the same time the institute should come out with eco-friendly design for adoption by the people of northeast for modern industrial goods so that the modernization and preservation of the ecosystem can go hand in hand," he said.

"The promotion of the textile sector in the region as well as the initiatives under the National Bamboo Mission should also get support from this institute," he concluded, wishing that the new institute would be of great benefit to both the region and the country.

Moreover, children between ages 3 and 6 years not attending any kind of pre-school is very high in Meghalaya and the percentage of such children in the state is increasing year after year since 1997.

Amongst the seven districts of the state, Jaintia Hills fares the worst in imparting elementary education, the report stated.

The report comes as no surprise since pre-school teachers, mostly in rural areas, are still getting a salary of Rs.1,800 despite many appeals to the government. This salary has remained unchanged for the past ten years, so many of these teachers juggle between several jobs to make ends meet.

"Many of the elementary school teachers have outsourced their jobs to others. In return they get 50 percent of the salary and carry on other work," the report said.

"In such a scenario, how can the state expect to do well in imparting elementary education," Sangma said.

He also claimed that the central government's flagship programme - the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme - has also lured children away from the schools in the villages.

"Many school children are not attending their classes and are taking up jobs under the MGNREGS. The state government must ensure that such instances do not take place," Sangma said.

Panjab varsity to hold first alumni meet on Saturday

Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU), one of the oldest universities in the country that is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's alma mater, is organizing its first university-level alumni meet on Saturday.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra will deliver the inaugural address at the meet and several former students are expected to participate.

PU's Dean-Alumni Relations Bhupinder Singh Bhoop said around 225 alumni of 1970 batch and previous ones will be honored on the occasion.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been a former student as well as a faculty member of the economics department in the PU in 1950s and '60s. However, he is unlikely to participate in the event this time.

Various teaching departments of the university will also be holding events to mark the alumni meet.

Panjab University was established in 1882 at Lahore (now in Pakistan). It shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh's Sector 14 in late 1950s. It is now spread over an area of 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25 of Chandigarh.

The university has 75 teaching and research departments and 15 centres and chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh.

PU has 188 affiliated colleges across Punjab and has three regional centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur. It also has one regional rural centre in Punjab. IANS

Dalai Lama to felicitate Super 30 founder

Patna: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will on Saturday felicitate Anand Kumar, who founded Bihar's free coaching centre Super 30 and helped many underprivileged students enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace laureate, will felicitate Anand Kumar at a programme in Mumbai organised by the Bihar Foundation, Mumbai chapter. The Dalai Lama will deliver a discourse on the occasion.

"He (Anand) has been invited as a chief guest at the function. The Dalai Lala will present him a memento," the foundation spokesperson Ragini Gautam said.

She also said it was the first time that the Dalai Lama would speak at a public forum to renew the Buddhist links between Bihar and western India.

Anand was evidently happy with the honour. "Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader. His blessings will help me work more. Such honours inspire me, but also add up to the responsibility to do more for the society," he said.

Kumar, who started the Ramanujam School of Mathematics in 1992, founded the Super 30 in 2002.

In the last eight years, the novel initiative has helped 212 students clear the IIT entrance test. During the last three years, all the 30 students of the institute made it to the IITs every year, drawing worldwide attention.

Most of the successful students have been from the most underprivileged sections of society. They are provided with free food, lodging and coaching.

This drew the attention of both national and international media. Last year, Time magazine declared Super 30 'the best in Asia', while Newsweek selected it among the four most innovative schools in the world. IANS

IIMs trash HRD suggestions on teaching hours, smaller boards

Bangalore: Faculty bodies at IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Bangalore have passed unanimous resolutions to set aside the reports which suggest reducing the size of IIM boards and societies and asking each faculty to teach for 160 hours a year.

Other IIMs are likely to follow suit seeking broader consultation on the proposed reforms.

They have trashed the HRD ministry-appointed committee reports on the new governance structure and teaching load, saying that they are based on incorrect data.

They believe that these recommendations are the outcome of several wrong assumptions and incorrect data and would not allow IIMs to become global leaders. These changes, if implemented, will have a negative impact on the morale of the faculty, IIM-B faculty said in a memorandum submitted to board of governors chairman Mukesh Ambani last week.

They have now called for a fresh panel involving alumni and eminent academics to create a governance structure for long-term development of IIMs.

A five-member committee headed by IIM-Ranchi chairman R C Bhargava had recommended reducing the size of the IIM boards and societies by almost half, and allowing corporate bodies, individuals and alumni to become members of the IIM society by paying Rs 20 crore, Rs 5 crore and Rs 3 crore respectively.

The IIM-B faculty rejected the idea, saying that it will lead to a major structural change in the ownership of IIMs and would be completely against public interest. They believe that contribution for the society should be more in the nature of developing institutions rather than owning the institutions.

The dons at the elite Bschools have also taken exception to the HRD ministry's decision to fix a minimum teaching load for faculty which will be the same for all IIMs.

Extra marks for right attitude- CBSE

Chennai: The Central Board of Secondary Education has said Class IX students can score higher marks in maths or science by showing they have a healthy attitude or adequate life skills.

In a recent circular, CBSE has asked schools to award higher grades in subjects under the scholastic category, which includes English, mathematics, science or social science, to students who get exceptionally good scores in coscholastic areas where they are tested attitude towards the teacher, discipline, or leadership qualities.

All school heads are advised to explain this promotion policy for Class IX in detail to parents, teachers and students to create awareness and avoid unnecessary inconvenience at a later stage the CBSE circular said. School heads consider this directive as a reminder to schools that have failed to take assessment in co-scholastic areas.

While considering co-scholastic areas for promotion of a student from one class to the next, CBSE has said that after converting grades into grade points, a student who scores in the highest range may be upgraded to the next higher level in two scholastic subjects, and those in the second highest range may be upgraded to the next higher grade in one scholastic subject.

For instance, a child is good at debating, which reveals leadership qualities, then scores obtained in this activity could be added to the student's English scores. ''Some schools have been following this. The CBSE directive is a call for others to keep up with these proactive schools,'' said Satish.

Senior principal of Chennai's RMK Group of Schools, C Satish said that some schools still consider only academic skills for promotion. This circular is expected to be a wake-up call for such schools to take note of the importance that the CBSE places on developing life skills, and attitudes and values of children.

New IIIT to be set up in West Bengal

Kolkata: The central government has approved the plan to set up an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in West Bengal, the state's Information Technology Minister Debesh Das said here on Thursday.

"The government of West Bengal has got an IIIT. The centre has sanctioned our proposal for setting up of the IIIT," Das said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of INFOCOM here.

"The centre will provide 50 percent of the cost, state will provide 35 percent and the rest will come from the industry," he added.

He, however, did not give details of the project.

"In 2006, the people working in the (infotech) sector was 32,000 and in 2010 it stood at 105,000. In 2006, IT export from the state was Rs.2,700 crore and in 2010, it became Rs.6,500 crore," Das said.

"In these four years (from 2006 to 2010), several IT firms, including Infosys, Wipro, TCS, Patni and Tech Mahindra, bought land for their campuses here," Das said.

"We have more potential, to use this potential we need things (infrastructure) to be tripled in the coming three to four years," he said. IANS

Meghalaya ranks poorly in elementary education - report
