The Tata Building India School Essay Competition is a key initiative undertaken by the Tata group to motivate the youth of India to think about nation building. This essay competition provides a unique platform to encourage the young leaders of tomorrow to express themselves, on a host of subjects related to nation building. Instituted in 2006, as an English language competition, it has now become India’s largest essay writing competition. In 2010-11, the competition is expected to attract over 3 million students in 150 cities across 8 languages. The competition is very well received by both students and the teaching fraternity reflected by the overwhelming response from participating schools and students. The Tata group believes that if young minds are ignited positively they can bring greater glory to the nation and help create a Happy India.
The Competition Structure : The Tata Building India School Essay Competition will be a two-phase activity in the participating schools. The first phase consists of the screening of an inspirational film as a stimulus for the young minds, to get them thinking and to bring a greater focus to the subject. As part of this stimulus one of two Tata-themed documentary films will be screened at the schools. These are:
Keepers of the Flame, a documentary by noted filmmaker Zafar Hai chronicling the lives of Jamsetji Tata, JRD Tata and Naval Tata and their efforts to industrialise India. Speak for the Earth, which details the varied efforts of Tata companies to help preserve the planet. This will be accompanied by an audiovisual on the history of the Tata group. Following the screening, children from Classes 6 to 12 are asked to write essays on topics of national significance. To ensure a level playing field, the entry of the students is pegged on 2 participating levels junior level for students in Classes 6 to 8; and senior level from Classes 9 to 12.
Topic of the Essay Competition:
The underlying theme of the topic is always nation building. The topics are carefully chosen to allow students to be creative, insightful and genuine. The theme of the 2009-10 competition was ‘Future India’. The topic was ‘What steps should India take to become a prosperous & secure nation in the next 5 years’. Some of the previous years’ topics have been: ‘Your suggestions on what you would do to make India a happy country’. ‘What would India do to win 20 gold medals in the 2016 Olympics’, ‘If I were the Prime Minister of India, what would I do to make India a super power by 2020′, ‘What must we do to make our education system prepare us for a better tomorrow’ and ‘India in the last 60 and next 60′.
Judging Procedure : The essays by the students are screened at 2 levels:
Essays at the school level are shortlisted by the identified judges within the school and from the shortlisted entries per school, through an independent judging process comprising of 3 judges, the school level winners are indentified. The essays of the school level winners across the schools from each city are collected and evaluated by a panel of 3 judges from the academic and journalism fields for city level recognition as toppers from the respective cities. The best essays from each city are finally judged by an elite panel comprising of eminent people to choose the national winners. The essay is written by the child only once and is evaluated at three levels. The national jury for this diverse competition has included eminent panels of judges from journalism, media & academia. In 2008-09, the panel comprised of Anil Dharker, Dileep Padgaonkar, Prof. Prabhat K Pandeya. In the past the national jury has had eminent people like Prof. Paintal, the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, and the Heads of Department of English from Mumbai and Chennai universities.
Rewards and Recognition : The winners at each level are rewarded and recognized by the Tata group at special functions held to congratulate the school level winners, the city level winners and the national level winners. Prizes at the school level include certificates, trophies and special Tata Building India Essay Competition merchandise like Travel Bags & Coffee Mugs. The city winners and the runners-up receive, in addition to the school level prizes, handycams and digital cameras. The national level winners receive laptops along with a trophy and a certificate. The crowning moment for the national winners and the runners-up is the intended visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan for a face-to-face meeting with the President /Vice President of India or a national level dignitary.
