AMU organizes seminar on Contemporary Indian Literature

Aligarh: A two-day national seminar on "Contemporary Indian Literature to National Integration" was organized by the Department of Indian Modern Languages at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) here.

Delivering the keynote address at the seminar, noted Bengali writer, Professor Barun Kumar Chakraborty said that literature plays a very vital role in strengthening national integration.

"It draws attention to love, affection, sympathy and the subtle qualities of a human being. One may have different aptitude, may be a follower of a particular religion but that does not mean he or she will have hatred towards others who do not subscribe to his or her views. Literature teaches us tolerance too", Prof. Chakraborty said.

A former professor of Kalyani University, Prof. Chakraborty pointed out that, "In the language of functional politics, the term 'national integration' means cohesion but not fusion, unity but not uniformity, reconciliation but not merger, accommodation but not elimination, assimilation but not extinction, synthesis but not non-existence, solidarity but not regimentation of the many segments of the people in a territorial sovereignty".

He urged the delegates that literature should effectively be used in strengthening our integration. "We must not forget its tremendous potential for all time and for good", he said.

While highlighting the objectives of the seminar, Dr. T.B. Chakraborty, Chairman of the Department of Indian Modern Languages of AMU said, "National harmony is more relevant in the present situation of our country because we are facing with the disintegration elements in the society".

He said that the whole country is plunged today into disbelief, distrust and disrespect to each other's faiths, beliefs and culture. The theme of the seminar has a special message to convey towards national harmony.

In the presidential address, noted Persian scholar and former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Azarmi Dukht Safavi said that the spirit of unity and oneness is not a new concept in a democratic secular India but the great Persian poet Shaikh Saadi had said that 'all human beings are like one limb of the body'.

She hoped that the seminar would provide a platform to bring to the people of different faiths, language and culture closer and closer in order to promote and strengthen national integration.

Prof. Shaikh Mastan and Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi, Dean, Faculty of Arts also addressed the inaugural function.

A book 'Modern Bengali Prose Literature' by Dr. T.B. Chakraborty was also released by Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi.
