SCHOOL OF AERONAUTICS – AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING ADMISSION 2011 – NEW DELHI

If we look back a decade or two, we will notice that avionics was just limited to a few black boxes for communication and navigation installed on aircraft. But with passage of time avionics in the field of aviation has undergone a tremendous change. Integrated Digital Avionics as it is, referred to, has blossomed into a third dimension for aerospace vehicles, first two being airframe and engines. Any new advancement in electronics has tempted the A/C designer to add a new dimension to this avionics package. As a result, the avionics of today encompasses the aircraft flight control (fly by wire) also engine control (fully automatic Digital Electronics control), the integrated flight and fire control, cockpit displays and even utilities management in addition to communication and integrated navigation. Multiple roles are also being carried out in a truly integrated manner through the use of common digital format for data. This enables avionic systems to share data from a bank of common sensors and data links has permitted additional redundancies in hardware resulting to higher reliability and higher flight safety. Thus multi role aircraft are available with more reliability due to increased role of electronics. This has led to increase in cost of maintenance and manufacture of A/C. We know that avionics of today share 40% of the cost of military A/C and almost 55% of airforce budget.

The major escalation in cost of present day A/C is due to more advanced and developed avionics. Because of advancement in electronics / Avionics we have multi role a/c these days. Even present day helicopter carry a more modern fire control radar and digital avionic flight management computers. Some of present day A/C have advanced auto pilots and common digital automatic flight control and ground proximity warning system (GPWS). The stress these days is vastly on avionics updates which improves performance. Head up display is a new growth area being used on light transport a/c (LTA). The market of avionic is on the increase both in military and civil sectors. The new trend of increased role for avionic is definite to result in increase share of avionics in the local market also.

Haryana to introduce computer education in state colleges

Chandigarh: All government colleges in Haryana will run computer education courses to prepare youth from the state for the information technology (IT) industry, a senior official of the state's higher education department said on Wednesday.

"Haryana's Department of Higher Education has planned to introduce computer education in 67 government colleges of the state to provide employment opportunities," director general of higher education Dheera Khandelwal said here.

She said the emphasis on providing computer education will be particularly in the rural areas to bridge the economic and geographic divide with students from those areas.

Khandelwal said that screening tests and walk-in interviews were conducted this month in all 21 districts of Haryana to recruit qualified computer education teachers.

Haryana has emerged as a major centre of IT enabled services and software exports, she said.

"It is high time to prepare youth of Haryana with the necessary skills for the higher education and to benefit them from the emerging employment opportunities in the field of IT. The students, especially of weaker sections and the rural areas, should learn a minimum basic level of IT computer education and skills," Khandelwal added. IANS

Sibal announces additional 200,000 engineering seats

New Delhi: In a pleasant surprise for students, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday announced an increase of almost 200,000 seats in engineering courses in India.

As part of reforms in All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms, the minister also announced additional 80,000 seats in management and 2,200 seats in architecture courses.

The norms for land requirement for engineering colleges were also liberalized, with Sibal saying that lesser space will be needed for establishing technical institutes.

While an engineering college in rural India will need 10 acres of land, just 2.5 acres of land will be needed in urban areas. IANS

Lucknow University enrolls country's youngest matriculate

Lucknow: 'Wonder Kid' Sushma Verma, who holds the distinction of being the country's youngest matriculate at the age of seven, will now pursue her graduation from Lucknow University at the age of 10.

University authorities on Tuesday approved the application moved by Verma's parents a few months ago for enrolling their daughter in a science graduation programme.

"I am thankful to the university authorities for being so considerate. I am sure that with her hard work and sincerity, my daughter will one day make the entire university administration proud," Verma's father Tej Bahadur told the sources on telephone.

Lucknow University spokesperson S.K. Dwivedi said, "We should encourage every talented girl like Sushma. We hope with our decision the girl would inch closer to realize her dreams."

After clearing class 12 this year, Verma had taken admission in a degree college on a provisional basis.

"The college authorities had categorically told us that they would allow Sushma to take her B.Sc exams only if Lucknow University permits her for the same. Now, as the final decision has been taken, my daughter will sit in the exams and I am sure she would pass with flying colors," Bahadur said.

Born in Feb 2000, Verma cleared class 10 in 2007 with 59 percent and class 12 this year with 62 percent. Due to some reasons, Sushma had to clear her class 11 in two years.

"As my daughter cherishes the dream of becoming a doctor, she told us to enroll herself for a B.Sc course with Zoology, Botany and Chemistry as her subjects," Bahadur said. IANS

All new NIPERs to offer PhDs From 2011

New Delhi: The year 2011 has come up with great hope for all pharmaceutical students , with all the six new National Institute Of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) deciding to offer PhDs from the next academic session.

This can be considered as a good leap forward considering NIPER Mohali is the only Centrally-run NIPER currently offering doctoral programmes whereas the industry requirement is huge and unmet. As against the 150 trained Pharma personnel, NIPER Mohali is currently producing, India needs at least 1000 a year.

To begin with, about 10 doctoral research seats will be on offer in each of the six new institutes . The numbers will increase as the academic capacities of the institutes develop.

Located at Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Rae Bareilley and Hajipur, the new NIPERs set up three years ago, have been offering only Masters [^] programmes (60 per institutes). But the steering committee on new NIPERs, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, yesterday decided to offer doctoral research avenues in these institutes following a mounting demand for cutting-edge technologists from the blooming Pharma and health sector, short of human resources.

In the long run the promise is to produce about 1000 post-graduates and doctoral graduates annually.

At present there is only one central government-run NIPER, at Mohali in Punjab, producing 150 PGs in the Pharma sector every year. This is also the only NIPER offering MBA [^] in the sector.

But, the new NIPERs are still in a fledgling state, sources said, adding that the ones at Guwahati and Rae Bareilley have only started operating well from the year 2008.

All the new NIPERs are currently functioning under mentoring institutes which are the following - B.V. Patel Pharmaceutical Education and Research Development (PERD) Centre, Ahmedabad, for the Ahmedabad NIPER; Indian Institute Of Chemical Technology , Hyderabad, FOR Hyderabad NIPER; Indian Institute Of Chemical Biology, for the Kolkata NIPER; Guwahati Medical College for Guwahati NIPER; Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow for the Rae Bareilley NIPER and Rajendra Prasad Medical Research Centre for Hajipur NIPER.

On the demand side, the industry has projected an annul requirement of 1,000 trained Pharma personnel from NIPERs. Currently only about 5,000 students graduate annually in the pharmaceutical courses from 110 colleges in the country. These students rarely match industry requirements whereas the NIPERs can provide training in 14 disciplines with state-of-the-art infrastructure .

India's annual pharmaceutical production is valued at Rs. 55,000 crore and the industry is growing by leaps and bounds.

Entire periodic table etched on a hair

London: Scientists have written, on a strand of human hair, what they believe is the world's smallest periodic table - showing the power of nano-writing.

Experts at Nottingham University created the table, which is so small that one million of them could be replicated on a standard Post-It note, using a combination of an ion beam writer and electron microscope.

The symbols of all 118 elements were etched into the strand of hair taken from Professor Martyn Poliakoff, an expert in green chemistry at Nottingham. It was then presented to him as a birthday present, reports Daily Mail.

Poliakoff said, "Although the application was lighthearted I felt that it enabled us to show people how such nano-writing is done.

"Our microscopist Mike Fay made the whole operation seem so simple and really demystified it in a most appealing way."

The team from the Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre also entered the festive spirit and took advantage of the winter weather by engraving the words "Merry Christmas" onto a snowflake. IANS

ISRO gears up for Dec 25 GSAT launch

Chennai: Indian space scientists are gearing up for the Dec 25 launch of the advanced communications satellite GSAT-5P. The new entrant will retire INSAT-2E sent up in 1999 and will ensure continuity of telecom, television and weather services.

"The countdown will begin Friday 11.04 a.m. and the rocket will be launched at 4.04 p.m. Saturday," S. Satish, director at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), told the sources.

The 51-metre tall geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) carrying the 2,310 kg GSAT-5P satellite will blast off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, around 80km from Chennai.

Satish said pre-launch activities are being carried out at the rocket port and everything is proceeding at a smooth pace.

The rocket launch, originally scheduled for Monday, was aborted by ISRO Sunday when it detected a leak in one of the valves of the Russian-made cryogenic engine.

Subsequently ISRO and the Russian scientists held detailed tests to check the stability of the faulty valve.

The space agency decided on Wednesday to go ahead with the launch as the test results were satisfactory.

According to ISRO officials the weather in Sriharikota is clear and they do not expect any change in plans. IANS

HPU to introduce reserved seat for only girl child

Shimla: A proposal to reserve one seat in each professional course in 200 colleges under the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) for an only girl child has been approved by the university's executive council.

The proposal had been introduced as a novel way of fighting against female foeticide and had been put forward by the secretary of the student council at the varsity. The state of Himachal Pradesh, in recent years, has achieved much in the field of literacy and is now almost at par with the state of Kerala.

As the proposal has received the go ahead from the executive council of the university, it now requires approval from the academic council at its meeting in February next year. If the proposal is approved by the academic council, the seat for a single girl child will be reserved in all professional courses except medicine and engineering in all 200 colleges under the varsity.

The scheme had been introduced on the campus for postgraduate courses in June this year.

Vice chancellor of the varsity Sunil Kumar Gupta said that the proposal had been placed in front of the executive council on the suggestion of the student council secretary Shalini. "As soon as the proposal receives a nod from the academic council, the scheme will be implemented for professional courses such as BBA , BCA and MCA at the college-level as well," he said.

Although the sex ratio in the state of Himachal Pradesh is better than that of other neighboring states, the implementation of the scheme at HPU would be beneficial for those who do not discriminate between a girl and a boy and have a single girl child.

The percentage of literacy in the state is 76% according to the 2001 Census and may reach about 84% in the 2011 Census. It is also being speculated that the literacy level in the state may touch 90% within two years, which would place it on a similar position as Kerala.

India to launch advanced communications satellite on Dec 25

Chennai: With investigations into a leak in a rocket engine's valve providing satisfactory results on Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will celebrate Christmas by launching an advanced communications satellite, an official.

"The test results are satisfactory and the rocket's launch is scheduled for December 25. The launch countdown will begin 11 a.m. Friday," S. Satish, a director at ISRO, told the sources.

The rocket carrying the GSAT-5P satellite is expected to blast off from the second launch pad between 4 p.m.-4.15 p.m. on Saturday.

The GSAT-5P is meant to retire the INSAT-2E satellite sent up in 1999 to ensure continuity of telecom, TV and weather services and was originally scheduled for Monday.

However, ISRO on Sunday decided to postpone the launch of its geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) after it detected a leak in one of the valves of its Russian-made cryogenic engine.

The leak was detected during the pre-countdown tests, even as the 51-metre tall rocket was on the launch pad at Sriharikota, around 80 km from here.

ISRO officials had said some tests would be conducted on Tuesday to gauge the extent of the valve leak. They said the tests and discussions with Russian scientists would go hand-in-hand at Sriharikota.

The Russians had supplied seven cryogenic engines, of which five were used in earlier GSLV launches.

Another ISRO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the sources that the tests took around 30 hours and involved filling of liquid oxygen to check the valve. The liquid oxygen had to be later drained. The rocket's ground systems had to be reconfigured for the tests.

The cryogenic engine is fired by liquid hydrogen as fuel and liquid oxygen as oxidizer.

According to the official, the valve leak was in the liquid oxygen system while all other valves were functioning well.

He said the tests started on Tuesday at 4 a.m. and concluded at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

"The activities undertaken were similar to the ones carried out for a regular rocket launch. Around 100 scientists and technologists were involved in tests," he said. IANS
