Mumbai: Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ) of the Mumbai University plans to offer a two-year full-time master's programme in electronic media from forthcoming session.

The syllabus of the course has been designed by Mangesh Karandikar, lecturer at the Department of Communication & Journalism.

"The proposed programme will cover TV, radio and computer programming. This is for the first time Mumbai University has proposed such a comprehensive programme in electronic media at master's level," said Mangesh Karandikar.

"The syllabus of the proposed course has already been passed by the board of studies," said Sanjay Ranade, head of DCJ.

"Before the implementation we need academic council and management council's approval," added Ranade.

20 students will be given admission in the first year. The credit-based course will be divided into four semesters with four subjects in each semester.

Students will be taught communication and media theory, global electronic media, electronic media criticism and contemporary media (journalism, public relations and advertising) in the first semester, while the second semester will focus on computational and writing skills, reporting and business of electronic media among others.

The third semester will have web technologies. Students will be required to conceptualize, create and upload a website.

In the final semester, students will have to do a "media convergence project" where they will be asked to choose from a variety of subjects.

Mumbai University revamps distance education

Mumbai: The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) of Mumbai University is going to offer courses in Law, MBA and Psychology, rarely offered by the distance education mode.

An official from the varsity said, "We have been offering several flexible courses from time to time. The recent addition of the Bachelor's of Preparatory Programme (BPP) makes the institute more alluring to students. We have decided to change the name to IFOL to keep up with the changing needs of students."

A couple of options are being considered by the University for renaming, including IFOL and the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL). However, IFOL has received approval from 80 percent of the officials.

It was decided by the authorities 15 years ago to change the name of the institute from IDE to the Institute of Flexible and Open Learning (IFOL).

The IDE was set up in 1971-72 to meet the requirements of students who have been away from an institute due to economic and social constraints.

The IDE was first known as the Directorate of Correspondence Courses and was renamed IDE in 1993.
