IGNOU starts disability management course for medicos

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched a new Post-Graduate Diploma course in Disability Management (PGDDM) for medicos including MBBS, Ayurveda, Siddha or Unanai graduates.

The University has invited applications for admission to the January 2009 session.

Those having two years of experience in the relevant field will be given preference. The duration of the course will be minimum of one year and maximum of three years.

"The programme has been designed in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to explain the genesis of disability, terminologies used in the area of disability rehabilitation and to identify and assess children, adults and elderly having physical, sensory or cognitive impairments or those who are at risk", said V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity.

The programme will equip the learner for prevention, promotion, assessment, early identification, intervention and rehabilitation for all types of disabilities.

The programme also helps in understanding the rehabilitation methodology or strategies of persons with disabilities and in undertaking effective intervention to disability-related issues for children, adults and elderly with disabilities.

It also enables the learners to undertake medical intervention for disability-related health issues, plan and implement prevention programmes for people with disabilities, carry out parental and family counseling of persons with disabilities, and play a leadership role in advocacy, community mobilisation and generating awareness about preventive measures, possible therapies and productive potentials of persons with disabilities by propagating the needs and rights of the disabilities.

The programme has also been designed to make the learners aware of existing facilities and legislations available for persons with disabilities and help them referring the persons with disabilities for appropriate need-based rehabilitation intervention. It also makes them aware of disability certification procedures.

The common prospectus and handbook can be downloaded from the IGNOU website www.ignou.ac.in and filled-in forms have to be submitted to the Regional Director on or before January 30 along with the programme fee.

Centre directs MCI to revise norms for establishing colleges

New Delhi: The Central Government has directed the Medical Council of India (MCI) to revise the norms as prescribed in the MCI regulations for opening of new medical colleges on a minimum standard requirement for 50/10/150 MBBS admissions annually.

This was informed by Mrs. Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

Relaxations have been given in the norms for land requirement criteria for campus, bed strength, indoor occupancy for opening of medical colleges in the states where National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is operational, North Eastern states, hill states and hilly districts in other states.

For opening of new medical colleges in these areas, the total land requirement will be 20 acres in not more than two pieces of land separated by a distance of 15 kms as against 25 acres prescribed for other parts of the country.

The land separated by a road or canal connected with a bridge shall be treated as one piece of land for opening of medical colleges.

The criteria relating to bed strength in the teaching hospitals at the time of starting a medical college has been relaxed to 250 beds as against the 300 beds prescribe for other parts of the country.

The criterion for indoor bed occupancy in these areas has been relaxed to 60 percent. This will help in opening of new medical colleges in unserved and under-served areas of the country and also increase the number of medical colleges as well as production of doctors in the country.

These decisions will take effect only after the Medical Council of India (MCI) issues a notification on the same.

Punjab cuts fee for management quota in medical colleges

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Monday announced a 16.67 percent fee reduction for medicine, dental and ayurvedic medicine courses under the management quota seats. The fee cut is expected to attract more medical students in the state.
The fee cut will be only for special management quota seats for MBBS, bachelor of dental sciences (BDS) and bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and sciences (BAMS) courses.
According to a government spokesman, the fee for special management quota seats for MBBS has been reduced from Rs.600,000 to Rs.500,000 per year, while the fee for BDS has been reduced from Rs.460,000 to Rs.383,318. For BAMS, Rs.183,326 will be charged instead of Rs.220,000 earlier.
However, the government has not changed the annual fee of Rs.700,000 for NRIs for the MBBS course.
