Community Radio Station to come up at IIT Kanpur

New Delhi: A Grant of Permission Agreement has been signed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) to establish, maintain, and operate a Community Radio Station at the Media Technology Centre of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K).

As per the agreement, the Community Radio Station (CRS) is likely to be operational within three months.

"The upcoming CRS being established at IIT Kanpur, will serve the surrounding populace comprising of students, housewives, skilled and unskilled labourers, petty traders and private and government employees as well as retired persons", an official from the I&B Ministry said.

The CRS will broadcast knowledge on health care, agriculture, science and technology in addition to the literacy programmes for children and adults.

The station will provide a platform for creative and innovative programme making and will also run awareness campaigns on social issues. It will also have group discussions on contemporary topics.

"The I&B Ministry encourages the setting up of Community Radio Stations as it promises to provide an opportunity to the local communities to express themselves, share their views and particularly empower the women, youth and the marginalized groups to take part in local self governance and overall socio-economic and cultural development of the area", the official added.

It will also better inform the society about the developmental initiatives of the Government and promote transparency in the implementation of the schemes.

Uttar Pradesh university to launch schools for farmers

Lucknow: The Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology in Kanpur will open schools for farmers to impart scientific lessons on how to raise crop productivity, officials said on Monday.

"The upcoming schools will be set up in rural areas of Kanpur," the university's joint director (research) H.G. Prakash told sources.

According to Prakash, the state government has already approved the project in principle and has allocated Rs.4.8 million for it.

"Under the project, a total of 10 schools would be set up. A school would come up in a cluster comprising 4-5 villages," Prakash said.

"At these schools, scientists, research scholars and other experts from the university will give tips and information to farmers on pest management, precision farming, post-harvest handling, organic farming and other domains for increasing agricultural roductivity," Prakash added.

Classes at these schools would be organised every day from 10 am to 5 pm, Prakash said.

The construction of the schools is expected to start from next month, he added. IANS

Centre to amend Institutes of Technology Act, 1961

New Delhi: The Central Government will amend the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 to make the new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) eligible to award degrees to students.
The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2008 will be tabled in the coming session of the Parliament.
The new IITs are currently operating as registered societies and to be able to award degrees to its students, their names will have to be incorporated into the existing Act.
"A society does not have the power to award degrees to students. For the new IITs, currently operating as societies, their names will have to be incorporated into the Act", an official from the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry said.
The Institutes of Technology Act was amended in 1994 when IIT Guwahati came into existence. The IITs in Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Guwahati and Chennai were initially setup as societies.
As many as eight new IITs are being set up in the country during the current academic session to impart high quality technical education.
The new IITs are coming up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
The IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Orissa, Punjab and Rajasthan have started their academic sessions this year.
