IIT-Bombay gets new Director

Mumbai: Prof. Devang Khakhar has been appointed as the new Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B). Prof. Khakhar has taken his responsibility from January 1, 2009.

Prof. Khakhar succeeded Prof. Ashok Misra, who was held the office from May 2000 - October 2008.

Prof. Khakhar did his B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) in 1981 and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986.

He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT-B in January 1987, and has been with the institute since then.

More than 150 papers including papers in Nature and Science have been published by him.

Prof. Khakhar has been awarded several prestigious awards including the Bhatnagar Prize in 1997 and the Swarnajayanti Fellowship in 1998.

He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Khakhar is also a recipient of IIT-B's "Excellence in Teaching Award" and the "Mathur Award for Research Excellence."

He has served as Professor-in-Charge of IIT-B's Continuing Education Program from 2001-02, as head of the department of Chemical Engineering from 2002-04, and has been the Dean of Faculty Affairs since 2005.

IIT Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is located in Roorkee, a small town in the state of Uttranchal in India. The British established the college as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847. The college was renamed the University of Roorkee in 1949. Over the years, the institution has attained the fame of a leading educational institution for its fine quality academia, and also for its brilliant engineers.
The Government of India, through an ordinance issued on September 21, 2001, declared the institution as the country’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology.

The Institution is a frontrunner in higher technological education and provides excellent opportunities in basic and applied research. The institution, since its inception, has been a leading institution in research and in providing technical manpower and know-how to the country. The institution offers Bachelor’s degree courses in ten different disciplines of engineering, and postgraduate degrees in fifty-five different disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The institute has a number of departments and research centers catering to different disciplines of engineering and pure sciences.

The Institute is a member of the LAOTSE, the international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia, which facilitates exchange of students and senior scholars.

A bill passed by the Indian Parliament 21 September 2001 declared the institute as an Institute of National Importance.

Admission to undergraduate courses is through an All-India entrance test called Joint Entrance Examination, conducted by all the seven IITs in the country. IIT Roorkee has eleven courses under its B.Tech programme. The institute also offers five-year dual degree programmes wherein both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees are awarded. Kota ideal location for new IIT - Rajasthan Govt

Jaipur: The Government of Rajasthan has proposed Kota as the ideal location for the new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to come up in the state, ahead of Jaipur, Pilani, Udaipur, and Jodhpur.

Kota, over 250 kms from here, is known as the Education City. According to the 2001 census, Kota has an average literacy rate of 70 percent, which is much higher than the national average of 59.5 percent.

Kota, which once was Rajasthan's biggest industrial hub, is now coaching a large number of IIT aspirants in the country and some figures claim that one-third of the students who crack the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) are groomed in the city.

It is estimated that more than 20,000 students from different parts of the country land at Kota every year to realize their IIT dreams. Of which, around 1,500 students succeed, which is one-thirds of the total seats of IITs and allied institutes.

The coaching classes of Kota have, year after year, produced exceptionally high success rates in the all-India entrance exams to the IITs and medical colleges.

Kota's success story in churning out IITians is not new, but the Central Government is not in favour of the site proposed by the state government for the IIT.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has asked the state government to search for a location other than Kota for the institute.

An official from the HRD Ministry said, "The state government is proposing no place other than Kota, which is far-flung and 200 kms from the capital Jaipur. So logistics and access are a concern. The other and more worrying area of concern is that since Kota is a major IIT-JEE coaching hub, setting up an IIT here is not very desirable as it would encourage the coaching lobby. While sites at Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur are being talked about and we are open to any of them and preferably Jaipur, which is best connected, the state government is not ready to talk anything other than Kota".

Indian institutes gain ground in world university rankings

New Delhi: After the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) featured in the Top 200 World University Rankings 2008, several other reputed institutions of higher learning from India have secured a spot among the top varsities of the world.

The 2008 edition of the THE-QS World University Rankings indicates the recognition of the depth of the Indian education system amongst the world's leading academics and employers with an increase to five in the world's top 400.

IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay, on the back of a worldwide improvement in technological universities, both reached the prestigious top-200 for the first time, cementing their positions as the leading schools in Asia and worldwide.

Also performing well, IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Madras have seen similar drastic increases in their rankings, a testament to the growing reputation of higher education in India.

Delhi University (DU) has, however, dropped several places to 274 this year. Last year, it stood at the 254th position.

IIT Bombay receives 5 million dollar grant

Mumbai: Distinguished alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) and founder of the Symphony Group, Mr. Romesh Wadhwani, gifted his alma mater $5 million for establishing a Bio-Science Center.The announcement was made during an alumni gathering of IIT-B. The money will be used to set up the Wadhwani Research Centre and Bioengineering."I owe my success in life to the superior education I received from IIT Bombay, and this is my way of saying thank you," said Romesh Wadhwani.Anil Kshirsagar, President of the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund, said, "Mr. Wadhwani's generosity is another example our alumni's consistent commitment to give back to IIT Bombay."Emphasis will be given on research in certain types of cancer fighting bacteria, which includes slowing bacteria division and growth and thus ultimately addressing bacterial diseases like tuberculosis. "Several international institutes that are involved in world-class research in these areas will be a part of the advisory board,'' said Wadhwani, an electrical engineer from the class of 1969.Ashok Misra, IIT-B Director, said, "The endowment will help us establish contacts with leading bio-researchers through the Wadhwani Foundation"."The aid will also help the school to invest in high-end research in healthcare such as Cell Signalling, Bio-Stem cells, Telemedicine", said D. Panda, head of the Bio-Sciences school at IIT-B.

Tamil Nadu rejects IIT-Delhi study on Mullaperiyar Dam

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu Government has refused to accept the study report on the Mullaperiyar Dam prepared by a team of professors from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D).
Professors from IIT Delhi had said that the dam would be 'Hydrologically Unsafe' in the event of heavy rainfall and subsequent floods.
The team of experts from IIT Delhi comprised of Prof. A.K. Gosain and Prof. Subhash Chander.
Durai Murugan, Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister said, "How can we accept a report that has been prepared by two retired professors of IIT Delhi and who were appointed by Kerala Government? The report advocates the Kerala Government."
The Minister further added that a committee appointed by the Supreme Court had already conducted a study on the structure and safety aspects of the Dam and found that the water level could be increased upto 142 feet after carrying out minor repairs. This report was also accepted by the Central Water Commission.
The study by IIT Delhi said that, "The maximum probable rainfall in two days in the catchment area of the dam is about 65 cms, while the PMF recorded is 2,91,275 cusecs. If the catchment area receives heavy rainfall, the PMF level of water in the dam could go up to 158 feet which is more than the maximum level allowed. This would result into collapsing of its walls and consequent flooding."
Kerala Minister for Water Resources, N.K. Premachandaran earlier said that the state had also asked the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R) to conduct a study on the 'structural stability' of the Mullaperiyar Dam in the event of possible earthquakes.

IIT Delhi students, teachers march against faculty quota

New Delhi: Defending the autonomy of world-class institutes of excellence, nearly 200 students and professors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) on Saturday night staged a candlelight march to protest the government's direction to reserve 49.5 percent of faculty positions in IITs for socially backward classes.The protest, which started a little after 8 p.m., continued for an hour with 45 professors and more than 150 students holding candles and walking around the IIT campus. The "silent protesters" said they were against 49.5 percent quota - 27 percent for other backward classes (OBCs), and 22.5 percent for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes - in the IIT faculties."In world-class institutes, you cannot introduce faculty quota. Is the government trying to reduce the value and position of institutions like IITs?" asked Abhijeet J., a student."In the name of reservation let's not compromise with quality. The faculty quota cannot be implemented…please," he told IANS."Quota for students can be understood to some extent but not for faculties. Top institutions' autonomy needs to be respected and preserved," said Rohan Paul, another student.The 45-member faculty delegation led by M. Balakrishnan, dean of postgraduate studies and research at IIT-Delhi, expressed their dissatisfaction over the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry's move.Another student said autonomy was snatched away from almost all Indian institutions of excellence. "And the final nail in the coffin came in the form of the draconian directive of implementing reservations in IIT faculties," said a participant. The protesters said the IITians wanted to initiate an "organized struggle against the government's caste-based reservation policies".The students also said that similar protests were carried out in Bangalore and Mumbai.Currently India has seven IITs and three more will be operational during the course of the year. "And the final nail in the coffin came in the form of the draconian directive of implementing reservations in IIT faculties," said a participant. IIT student commits suicide

A fourth year engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room, the police said on Saturday.

Toya Chatterjee, 23, was a student of biological science and biotechnical engineering department. She was found dead in her room late on Friday night.

The police recovered a suicide note from the room written in Bengali. The note, addressed to her father, said: "I will not be able to get B Tech degree this year. I am ashamed of it. So I am ending my life. Take care of my mother after my death."

Director of the institute Sanjay G. Dhande said that Chatterjee was a brilliant student and had recently cleared the Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission to the Indian Institutes of Management.

But she was not keeping well for the past one year and was under the treatment of a private doctor. Due to her illness, she was not attending her classes regularly, he said.
Dhande said the counsellors at the institute had informed her father thrice about her physical health and her state of depression.

Her friends also said that she was upset over her inability to submit her project work.
This is the second suicide at the institute in the last two months. On April 8, a first year engineering student had committed suicide by hanging himself.
