RGUHS Red-flags IGNOU's Healthcare Courses

BENGALURU: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has objected to the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offering some courses on health sciences.

Dr C N Manjunath, director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, raised the issue at a recent Syndicate meeting of RGUHS. Subsequently, RGUHS decided to write to the Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking an advice to IGNOU to discontinue such courses.

“Offering any health science course through distance mode will not be allowed or entertained as there will not be sufficient practical training for them. This will ruin the quality of medical education and health services,” Dr Manjunath told Express.

He said those who complete such courses in distance mode will be easily accommodated in low quality hospitals for low remuneration. “There are some chains of hospitals coming up across the nation and these candidates will easily get jobs there. ...it is our responsibility to alert the society,” he said.

He said a majority of people are not aware of the actual qualifications needed in the field. Someone who has a PG diploma through distance mode cannot be called a cardiologist, he said.

The IGNOU authorities at the Bengaluru regional office were not available for comment. The university has set up a dedicated school on health sciences. “The School of Health Sciences was set up with the objective of augmenting educational avenues for medical, nursing and paramedical personnel through distance mode,” the IGNOU website says.
