ASU GRADUATE COLLEGE – DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS 2010

Dissertation Fellowships are competitive university-wide fellowships designed to support highly meritorious doctoral students who are in the final stages of post-candidacy doctoral work: Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. Awards will be made across the following five areas: (1) arts, humanities, and social sciences; (2) natural sciences and mathematics; (3) engineering; (4) professional programs and education; and (5) interdisciplinary research.

Awards : The Graduate College fellowship provides a $17,000 award plus tuition during the final year of study. At the time of the award, the student must be in good academic standing as defined by the department and the Graduate College. The academic unit nominating the student provides health insurance.

Eligibility : The nominee must:
1. have demonstrated the ability to carry out original research at a high level
2. have already advanced to doctoral candidacy by February 1 of the academic year
3. be prepared to devote full time to writing the dissertation with no other employment, including university assistantships.
4. be within one year of completion of the dissertation upon receipt of the award.
5. maintain a minimum of six (6) graduate level credit hours each semester. Enrollment: nine (9) graduate level credit hours is highly recommended.

Application Procedure : The academic unit submits nominations (electronically) to the Graduate College by the deadline listed above to Pat Saldivar at psaldivar@asu.edu . Applications must be submitted and ranked by the student’s academic unit for evaluation and prioritization in accordance with the unit’s established criteria.

Application packet must include the following:
1. a copy of Graduation Office Candidacy letter (application will not be considered without it)
2. a 5-7 page statement addressing the significance of the project, theoretical framework, data and methods, research questions/hypotheses, any preliminary findings, and statement of broader impact.
3. Curriculum Vitae
4. a letter of support from the doctoral dissertation committee chair addressing proposed dissertation progress and timeline for completion. Chair should also attest to the student’s ability to meet the terms of the fellowship during the award year.
5. a letter of support from the academic unit chair/director/ or graduate director which must include a commitment to provide health insurance during the fellowship year. This letter should also include a ranking number if more than one nomination is being submitted by the unit.
6. an unofficial ASU transcript.
