Abnormal hike in DU course fees irks PGSU

DIBRUGARH, June 30: “The alarming hike in fees by Dibrugarh University (DU) for various courses is unacceptable,” stated the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of the university. Demanding a rollback, they announced that they would not hesitate to take up agitational steps if the authorities did not heed to their appeal.

During a press meet held at its office today, the students’ body said that the fees for all the courses have been raised and for certain courses, doubled. General Secretary Arindam Buragohain stated that they met with the Vice-chancellor and the Registrar in this regard on June 29 and discussed how the present fee structure would put higher education out of reach of students from modest background. He also alleged that the former retorted that higher education was not meant for the poor and justified the move by saying that the increase was to meet the shortfall in the money needed to pay the faculty since the amount received from the State Government was not enough.
