HYDERABAD – NATIONAL SEMINAR ON ESGB – DPS

The true meaning of democracy lies in the empowerment of the people. While most countries in the world have claimed that they have moved on to adopting democracy as their system of governance, most have fallen short when it comes to the real and complete empowerment of all sections of their societies. Even the most advanced democracies such as the United States of America and European democracies such as the United Kingdom and France are even today nowhere near completely empowering their people. Major sections of society only make do with the right to vote as the only proof of their being empowered.

This reality is even starker in the case of newer democracies such as India. Traditional social hierarchies coupled with newer stratifications have ensured that empowerment is unevenly distributed among the various sections of the Indian population. The problems of enclave development inherited at the time of independence from colonialism and their persistence till today, attitudes of inequality based deeply in the caste system that the country has had for centuries, emergence of newer class structures with the gradual shift of the country towards global capitalism, uneven distribution of social and economic goods over regions, the ever existing shadow of communalism and opportunistic policies of political parties have all contributed to the lack of even empowerment of the people of India.
