Now, 5 attempts to clear CBSE exams

New Delhi:
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the practice of declaring 'Compartment / Fail' in a subject will be discontinued from the current academic session.

As a part of its Examination Reforms, which will also see the implementation of the nine-point grading system, CBSE has introduced the system of awarding of 'Qualifying Certificates' to successful students.

Those candidates, who obtain the qualifying grades (D and above) in all subjects excluding the Additional subject, will be awarded a Qualifying Certificate.

Students who obtain grade E1 or E2 in a subject will have to improve their performance through subsequent five attempts.

For example, a candidate who appeared in Board's examination in March 2010, can appear in July 2010, March 2011, July 2011, March 2012 and July 2012 only in subjects in which he / she has got grade E1 or E2 till he / she gets qualifying grades (D and above) in all the subjects excluding Additional subject as per Scheme of Studies and becomes eligible for award of Qualifying Certificate.

Only those who get Qualifying Certificates shall be eligible for admission in higher classes.

"Schools begin ranking students, on the basis of their marks, from as early as their pre-primary years. Such a drive has several negative effects on learning. Students, parents and society at large become anxious in the race to acquire more and more marks in examinations which leads to an extremely stressful existence. Moreover, though all out efforts are made to enhance the reliability of examination, the human error cannot be avoided. This shortcoming can be overcome if the students are placed in ability bands that represent range of scores", a CBSE official said.

IIMs extend CAT registration date by 10 days

New Delhi:
New Delhi: This spells relief for tens of thousands of students. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on Wednesday extended their last date to accept online applications for their Common Admission Test (CAT) by 10 days to October 11.

The decision was taken in view of several gazetted holidays in September that hampered many students' chance to apply for a seat at the premier management schools.

This time, the IIMs have for the first time gone online to invite applications and conduct examinations with a tie-up with Prometric, a technology-enabled examination conducting firm.

"With the large number of candidates throughout the country taking the CAT every year, the extended window will allow those who might have been inconvenienced by these holidays more time to obtain a voucher and register for the inaugural computer-based CAT 2009," the IIMs and the Prometric announced on Wednesday.

Ramesh Nava, vice president of Prometric, said that since September 9, when the registrations opened, at least 200,000 students have registered themselves for the tough CAT tests.

Several students complained in early September that the IIMs had not given them the 'edit' option in filling up the form, and any mistake typed once cannot be rectified. The IIMs said the option has now been provided.

Last year, around 270,000 aspirants had appeared for the CAT that paves way for admission into the seven IIMs in the country. This year, the CAT examination starts Nov 28. IANS

India's first degree course on tackling terrorism

countering terrorism.

New Delhi: Sumaya Rafiq Zargar, 23, grew up in Srinagar under the shadow of militancy but does not want her next generation to live in fear. She is in a batch of 18 students who have enrolled for the country's first degree course in countering terrorism.

An initiative of Pune-based NGO Sarhad that works in insurgency-battered Jammu and Kashmir, the two-year post- graduate course called Counter Terrorism and Peace Management starts on October 2 - the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi - at the Sarhad Research Centre in Pune.

Sarhad runs a chain of colleges, including technical institutions. This course will be run by Sarhad Research Centre for Counter-terrorism and Peace Management. They have applied for recognition of the course by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

"I have seen terrorism from close quarters. My uncle died after being tortured by terrorists. Several nights, nobody in the family could sleep due to the fear of being killed. I don't want my next generation to grow up under the same fear and pain," Sumaya, a media professional, told sources.

She says the only reason for her joining the course is to understand the causes, ideologies, modus operandi and, ultimately, the ways to resolve the problem of terrorism.

The brainchild of Sanjay Nahar, the founder of Sarhad, the course was designed after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

"India has been a victim of terrorism for so many decades. And especially after the Mumbai terror attacks, it has become very important that we study terrorism and educate people about counter-terrorism strategy," Nahar told sources.

Of the 18 students -- four girls and 14 boys -- many are masters in business administration (MBA), hotel management graduates and media professionals. The course fees are Rs.30,000 a year.

"The course will be conducted in the weekends and students will be taken to terror-affected sites as part of their practical training. We have roped in various top senior policemen and army personnel, who have successfully thwarted terrorist attacks, lawyers, journalists and also some surrendered militants, who will explain how they became terrorists," Nahar said.

The center has received a good response from people abroad also. However, due to some legal technicalities none of them is enrolled in this batch. The centre is planning to accommodate them in the next batch.

Nahar said they had contacted some 10 five-star hotels and 200 companies for campus recruitment and a majority of them have shown interest.

Some companies have approached us to train all their employees in counter-terrorism and peace management, he said.

The first year of the course will include the etymology and philosophy of terrorism, terrorist ideologies and modus operandi, national policy and role of the print and electronic media.

The second year will focus on different terrorist groups, socio-economic factors that mould a terrorist's mindset, control strategy, retention camps, drugs and arms trafficking.

The course has been designed by experts from various fields -- legal, administrative, police, academic and security -- under the guidance of Aligarh Muslim University's former vice-chancellor Mahmud-ur-Rahman.

Rahman, a retired officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), had served in various administrative posts in Jammu and Kashmir from 1966 to 1995.

"The students will be equipped to work at the ground level in areas affected by terrorism and play a vital role in restoring peace and harmony. Also, with their understanding they will be equipped to help societies and businesses come up with strategies and ideas to combat terrorism," said Rahman.

There will be visiting faculty from other terror-affected Asian countries -- Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Iraq.

On the advantage of the course, Rahman said: "There is no counter-terrorism training or knowledge offered to common people though they become the major victims in any terror attack. The course is about managing peace in the country." IANS

Latest Events Exam Results SMS RESULT to 56263 NIT Warangal to become university with medical, law courses too

Warangal
Warangal (Andhra Pradesh): After serving as a premier engineering school for 50 years, the National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Warangal is set to become a full-fledged university that will offer a host of courses, including medicine, law as well as postgraduate degrees in humanities and business economics.

"The aim is to become a university the way the human resource development (HRD) ministry has indicated," Y.V. Rao, the institute's director, told sources in an interview.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has expressed his intention to convert institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) into integrated universities that provide both medical and legal education among other courses.

While the IIMs and IITs have been cautious in their comment towards this proposal, NIT- Warangal is the first to announce its plans of transforming into a university to sources.

"We will retain our original name (NIT-Warangal) but it will become an integrated university with both medical and legal education among other programmes beyond engineering and technology.

"We will also provide postgraduate courses in humanities, business economics, biotechnology and many others. The focus will gradually shift to from under-graduation to post-graduation and research," Rao explained.

NIT Warangal is the first among the NITs. It was dedicated to the nation by the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru way back in 1959. Then it was known a regional engineering college. The institute is older than many IITs, including IIT Delhi.

Currently, India has 20 NITs and the union cabinet had earlier this month given the go ahead to set up 10 new NITs, including six in the northeastern states.

The director said the institute, which started its journey with a little over 100 students from a temporary campus, now boasts of 4,200 students. In 2006, the institute had 2,000 students of which 1,600 were pursuing B.Tech courses and the rest M.Tech.

"While all the central government institutes are implementing the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota in three years, we did it at one go. With an increase in the number of seats, we have shifted our focus to post-graduation and research. Out of 4,200 students, currently 1,400 are M.Tech students and 300 are PhD scholars," Rao added.

Like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, NIT-Warangal will become an integrated university and provide all kinds of courses to students to help the country move forward in the field of higher education, he said.
"The process of becoming a university will start from the coming academic session but it may take a few years to become a full-fledged one. We are targeting 5,000 students by 2011 and 15,000 by 2015," Rao said, elaborating on his mega plan.

"We are planning to have the school of medical science next year. We are going to give emphasis on biotechnology and microbiology and here the school of medical science will help us grow in both research and innovation."

Asked about the infrastructure and faculty shortage problems the institute may face while expanding, the director said: "We are getting ready for it and I don't think we will have much problems."

The institute is getting ready to celebrate the culmination of its yearlong golden jubilee celebrations late October. IANS
