Class X Board Exams may be scrapped

Kapil Sibal in favour of scrapping Class X Board exams
In a move that could provide relief to Class 10 students , Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal is planning to scrap the Class 10 board examination.

Sibal is of the opinion that examination-based system causes trauma to both the parents and the students. He also felt that the time had come to restructure the system and make it less strssful for the students.

Sibal said that since the student continued in the same school even after Class 10, board exams were not required.

However, Sibal said that a final decision in this regard would be taken only after consultations with the state education boards and schools.

The latest statement came in the backdrop of earlier assurance of reforms by the Minister in school as well as higher education.

Kalam revives 247-year-old India ties at Trinity College

Dublin: Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has launched a twin India-focussed initiative at the Trinity College in Dublin during a visit that helped spark a renewed interest in India at the 417-year-old university.

The university announced the establishment of an India chair and a post in Indian studies to coincide with Kalam's visit on Friday - held amid a warming of India-Irish ties and plans for greater collaborations in education and science and technology.

The post in Indian studies has been sponsored by groups representing the 25,000-strong Indian community in Ireland while the India Chair will be funded by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Trinity Provost John Hegarty said.

The university hopes the move will attract more Indian students, particularly in the fields of science and technology, where the numbers of Irish students have been falling.

"At the moment we have around 100 Indian students. We can quadruple that without a problem," Hegarty told sources.

"We want to attract the best Indian students. The motivation is not only financial - we have to make sure we are delivering quality as well. The experience of every student while they are in Trinity is vital to us," he added.

Trinity College, which figures in lists of the world's top 100 and Europe's top 50 universities, has a historic connection with India dating back to 1762, when it established its Chair of Oriental languages

The links grew exponentially in the second half of the 19th century when it hosted an India Civil Service School, which supplied over 150 graduates to the ICS, the bureaucratic service that ran the British Raj.

The author of the first Linguistic Survey of India (1898-1928), a mammoth compilation, was Trinity graduate George Grearson - a mathematician-turned Sanskrit scholar who too joined the ICS.

Hegarty said the university now wanted to build upon those historical links and was particularly keen to attract young Indian researchers in science and technology, having set up a 75 million-euro research institute for Nano science.

"We only upped our game in India two years ago. We want to be a magnet for the best students from India and elsewhere," he said.

"Ireland has a problem of brand recognition as a country. We want to tell Indians that here they have another English-speaking country in Europe."

Reserved category students face problems due to lack of result CDs

New Delhi: Students who belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) are facing problems regarding submission of admission forms of Delhi University (DU).

All these students have to submit their original certificates with their admission forms, while other students have to submit their original certificates on June 26.

SC/ST students from states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh and students from Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are facing problems in this regard because not all these boards and institutes have submitted their result CDs to DU, which is causing problems for the students.

Several of students from SC/ST categories have been approaching to the office of the dean, student's welfare since June 1.

"We can not accept the downloaded certificates as the boards have issued a disclaimer that they are not responsible for any error in the certificates. So how can we accept the printouts?'' said S K Vij, Dean DSW.

CBSE, ICSE and state boards of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Nagaland have submitted their CDs for the benefit of the students.

"There are two ways, either the students show their original certificates or get it verified from the respective state's resident commissioners in Delhi. We at DSW would have verified and attested the certificates had the CDs been furnished to us," said Gurpreet Tuteja, deputy dean of DSW.

"We had a meeting with all the resident commissioners before the admission process started and have again sent a reminder to all of them. It is unfortunate, but the students are suffering due to the callous attitude of their respective states,''added Tuteja.
