Kharagpur: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) plans to increase its student intake from 8,000 to 20,000 by 2020 with an investment of about Rs.1,800 crore, B. Muthuraman, the chairman of its board of governors, said here on Saturday.
"The expansion will be done in two phases. The first phase envisages increasing intake capacity to 11,000 at an investment of Rs.800 crore by 2011-12. The second phase includes enhancing seats to 20,000 at an additional investment of about Rs.1,000 crore," Muthuraman, who is also managing director of Tata Steel, said during the 55th convocation function of the premier engineering institute.
The IIT-Kgp also plans to set up a medical college including a 300-750 bed hospital.
The institute's director Damodar Acharya said, "The hospital will be set up with a private partner. We are taking help of the University of California, San Diego." IANS.
