New Delhi: Prof. P.B. Sharma has been appointed as the First Vice Chancellor of Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering (DCE).
Prof. Sharma was appointed by Lt. Governor of Delhi Mr. Tejendra Khanna, also Chancellor of DTU and an order to this effect was issued today by Mr. V.K. Jain, Addl. Secretary, Department of Training and Technical Education, Govt. of NCT Delhi.
The upgradation of DCE into DTU has been through to an Act enacted by Delhi Assembly, Delhi Act 6 of 2009 which came into force on July 15th, 2009.
Prof. Sharma is a renowned academician who has steered DCE for the last two decades and brought it to its eminent position.
A Doctorate from Birmingham, Prof. Sharma is a former Professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) and has been the founder Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Technological University, Bhopal.
During his long association with DCE, he was able to introduce innovations in diverse areas and bring high international recognition to the institute.
Prominent among these include, 'Most Innovative Design Award' for DCE UAV, 'Most Improved Award' for DCE Robotic Submarine, First Prize for DCE Hybrid, 'Best Design Award' for DCE Supermileage vehicle to name a few.
Prof. Sharma succeeded in germinating research culture at under-graduate level and has transformed DCE into a research and innovation hub.
Recipient of many awards and recognitions, Prof. Sharma is also a fellow of World Academy of Productivity Sciences, fellow of Aeronautical Society of India, fellow of Institution of Engineers and elected fellow of Indian Society of Technical Education.
He is also the former President of the Engineering Science Division of Indian Science Congress and former expert Member of Central Advisory Board of Education of Govt. of India. Prof. Sharma has guided 14 PhDs and published over 140 Research Papers.
Prof. Sharma has received the Eminent Engineer Award 2008 from Institution of Engineers and also the Lifetime Achievement Award 2009 from Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering.
The DTU under his dynamic and visionary leadership is poised for quantum jump in quality of human resource development, industry sponsored research, technology incubation and product innovations.
According to Prof. Sharma, "The focus of DTU will be on offering world quality curriculum, industry relevant research and innovations. The DTU shall develop itself on the strength of the DCE comprising of its intelligent student community, qualified faculty and its distinguished alumni presence worldwide."
From the current academic session itself the DTU shall add four new undergraduate programmes in areas of Software Engineering, Engineering Physics, Automobile Engineering and Electrical and Electronics in addition to 6 Master of Technology Programs in New and Emerging Areas such as Nano-Technology, VLSI Design and Embedded System, Microwave and Optical Communication, Information Systems Management and Intelligent Power Systems, further an MBA Program in Knowledge and Technology Management and 50 PhD scholarships including 25 Teaching-cum-Research fellowships are being added this year.
These will be followed in subsequent years by Dual Degree Programmes and Integrated Master's Programme so as to create synergy between science and engineering thus, taking the student strength in DTU to almost three times of the current strength of around 3000.
