Girls outperform boys in CISCE exams 2009


New Delhi: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) announced the results of the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination - 2009 (Class X) and Indian School Certificate Examination (ISC) 2009 (Class XII) at 11 am today.

With an increase of 0.01 percent this year, 98.05 pc students have been declared pass in the ICSE exams while at the ISC level, the pass percentage was recorded at 97.08 pc, up by 0.04 pc.

This year, 108,217 students from 1493 schools and 52,552 students from across the country appeared for the ICSE and ISC exams respectively conducted in March this year.

Out of the total appeared students, 98.14 pc girls and 96.90 pc boys have been declared pass in the ICSE exam.

In ISC exam, girls have also done better than boys with a pass percentage of 98.18 pc, while 96.21 pc boys have been declared pass by the board this year.


Congratulating all students, Gerry Arathoon, Additional Secretary and Officiating Chief Executive and Secretary of CISCE said, "In both class X and XII girls have done better than boys and the overall result has also registered a slight increase in both class X and XII."

"Lesser number of girl students have been unsuccessful in this year's examination and we also have witnessed less withdrawal among girl students," added Arathoon.

The ICSE examination was conducted in 66 written subjects of which 19 were Indian languages and 14 were foreign languages. The examination was also conducted in subjects like Yoga, Agricultural Science, Drama and Indian Dance.

The ISC examination was conducted in 47 written subjects of which 13 were Indian languages and 6 foreign languages.

In the class X and XII examination, maximum number of students appeared from the northern region of the country comprising the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and Chhattisgarh.

The Western region recorded the best pass percentage i.e. 99.14 pc, followed by the Southern region with 98.66 pc in the ICSE results this year.

In the ISC results, Southern region of the country emerged with the best pass percentage at 97.78 pc followed by the Western region at 97.69 pc this year.

Southern region of the nation also registered maximum number of entry of girl students in class XII i.e. 48.55 pc.
In the ICSE examination, the highest marks was secured by a boy (not named) who scored 99 pc marks in English + best three subjects. A total of 796 boys and 905 girls have been placed in grade '1' in each of the seven subjects.

At the ISC examination also, a boy has attained the highest mark in English and best three subjects i.e. 99.25 pc. 22 boys and 43 girls have secured grade '1' in each of the seven subjects.

2,851 and 3,411 students from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) appeared for the ICSE examination this year in which respectively 96.63 pc and 97.48 pc students have been declared pass by the board.
Out of total appeared OBC students, 97.93 pc have been placed among pass students.

Out of total appeared SC/ST students, 93.25 pc and 96.23 pc have been declared pass in the ISC exam.
