Colleges to offer short-term certificate programmes in insurance

New Delhi: Despite the economic slowdown, Insurance companies are going ahead with their recruitment plans by tying up with several colleges and academic institutes to offer short-term certificate programmes in insurance and management to build a talent pool for the industry.

The senior officials are estimating rise in the headcount by approximately 50% in the next few months and recruit around 3 lakh financial planning advisors and 30,000 managers.

Financial planning advisors are the agents who sell insurance products even though they are not on the payrolls of the company.

"There is a shortage in the talent at the entry and mid-level as the sector is relatively new. Short-term courses will work well for those wanting to join the industry as they are tailor-made to suit the requirements of the companies," said a senior official of a Delhi-based private insurance company.

Private insurer Max New York Life that has an tie-up with Symbiosis Institute of Business Management and IMT Center for Distance Learning, has collaborated with School of Commerce of NMIMS University in Mumbai and Punjab College of Technical Education this year to offer PG diploma courses.

HDFC Standard Life too has recently announced its partnership with Manipal Academy for similar programmes.

Other insurers that have tied up with institutes are ICICI Prudential with Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, (IIM-C) to launch a 10-month executive programme in 2008 while MetLife tied up with the University of Delhi (DU).

It was only a few years back that there was no professional course on insurance and those who joined the industry came with a MBA degree. However, the scenario has changed as the insurance firms along with the academic institutes have started offering specialized courses at the post-graduation level.

Most of these courses are short term ranging from three months to one year.
