HRD Minister favours faculty quota in IITs

New Delhi: "The bill regarding the reservation of posts for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates in IITs and IIMs, passed in Rajya Sabha in the last Parliament session, has a scope for changes," said Arjun Singh, Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD).

Addressing the annual meeting of the National Monitoring Committee of Minority Education (NMCME), Arjun Singh said, "If the changes take place, it will lead to reservation in the posts of readers and professors as well."

Singh further aid that the HRD Ministry has decided to give legal powers to the NMCME Committee and a suitable law will make the Committee responsible / liable to the Parliament - for which the Ministry has already setup a sub-committee.

The Ministry is also determined to check the financial implications of extending the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme to unaided educational institutions.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and MDM are already being executed in minority population areas.

In the meeting, NMCME members were concerned about the persuasion of few state governments on NOC (no objection certificates) for starting minority educational institutions and the problems faced in getting the minority status.

They also wanted the Government to have focused approach for motivating minorities in higher education.

To this, Singh announced the setting up two coaching centres for minority students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Maulana Azad Urdu University, Hyderabad.

94 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya has been approved in urban areas for elementary education and around 7,828 renowned Madarsas are under the Education Guarantee Scheme of SSA with 10.1 lakh Muslim children.
