SNDT varsity to offer credit and semester based course

Mumbai: The SNDT University of Mumbai will offer its courses on semester and credit based from this academic year.

S. S. Mantha, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university said, "55 courses have already been converted as credit and semester based in 2008-09, as this initiative is taken by us in the same year. The remaining 35-40 programmes will be included from this year."

"This initiative has been taken to bring uniformity and flexibility in curriculum that will enable students to accumulate credits and switch on to another university wherein the credits could be seamlessly integrated," added Mantha.

The credit based system is followed by most of the universities across the globe. The credit based system will facilitate standardisation of the exam system.

Keeping in view the newly introduced credit system the syllabus has also been restructured and upgraded.

In the new system, the syllabus of a three year programme is typically divided into five to six semesters.

"There is usually 15 weeks in a semester and every four hours per week put in by a student typically gets translated to four credits. Each semester will have 16 to 24 credits," said Mantha.

Students will be evaluated at the end of each semester.

In the new format, while 75-80% of the course will have core content, the remaining will have electives or "add-ons".
