International book fair inaugurated in Kolkata

Kolkata: The 33rd International Kolkata Book Fair was inaugurated here in Kolkata by noted Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was also present during the inauguration of the book fair.

Starts from today the book fair will conclude on February 8. A delegation of 37 Scottish writers will attend the fair. The delegation will also host stalls from 17 other foreign countries.

Scotland is the focal theme of this year's international book fair.

The other participating countries are Cuba, Germany, Sweden and Pakistan. This is for the first timeVietnam is participating in the book fair.

"Book fairs are organized by several other cities across the globe but none of them can be compared to the one in Kolkata given the enthusiasm," said Mr. Bhattacharjee.

"Publishing books in national languages should be preserved," said Mr. Smith.
