IGNOU to establish three research, development centres

New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon establish three national level institutions including the IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education Training (IIVET), IGNOU Institute for Professional Competency and Advancement of Teachers (IIPCAT) and North-East Centre for Research and Development (NECRD).

The announcement was made by Prof. Omprakash Mishra, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IGNOU.

Announcing this Prof. Mishra said, "For now, we plan that the NECRD be developed to be a think-tank. 25 students of Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTAs) have been appointed who could pursue their PhDs and at the same time contribute to the extension and outreach activities of the university in the North East Region."

Prof. Mishra also informed that a lot of activities have bee planned by the varsity for educational development in the North-East region.

IGNOU has been a leading active player in education delivery in the region.

Hundreds of Study Centres have been established by IGNOU in North-Eastern Region to spread education among residents. These efforts are being further complemented by institution building in areas which have generally not got the importance they deserved.

The new initiatives in eight regional centres have ensured a quantum jump in the activity of IGNOU which promises to bring in the educational development of North-East states.

IGNOU will also establish a new Regional Centre at Guwahati to supplement the existing one.

Institutions for Agriculture and Extension Work in Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will also be established by the varsity.
