Colleges and Universities in Norway

The decentralization of Norwegian education system is part of the country’s educational policy. It is with this purpose that University colleges across the country were set up to make higher education more accessible.

Higher education in Norway can be divided into two major sectors: the university sector and the college sector. All institutions of higher education in the country are subject to the Authority of Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs. Due to the governing authority’s increased emphasis on economic, social and cultural development, higher education and research in the country is given due importance.

A board governs each institution, which is its highest governing body. The directors are responsible for the daily administration of the institutes. As per the law, the Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs is the authority that defines the general criteria required to qualify as a student. Students need to have general study competence, if they wish to join higher educational institutes in the country. However, some specific study programs may have restricted admission procedures, and therefore competence alone cannot guarantee a seat.

Students have sufficient number of options available in higher education. The Universities and university colleges offer graduate programmes in the country. Doctoral programmes can follow graduate degrees.

Admission Season in Norway The application deadline in the country for foreign students is from January 15 to March 15 for the courses beginning the following August. Some institutions can have different pre-qualification deadlines. Generally, the academic year begins in August and runs for 10-11 months.
