A variety and versatility of its own characterize higher education in Germany. Students pursuing higher education in Germany can complete their degrees in about five years but university degrees normally have a seven-year duration. Studying in universities is relatively cheaper as it involves only living expenses since higher education in Germany involves no more than a nominal fee. Students need to go for further studies if they wish to obtain advanced degrees.
Students belonging to lower income households can also avail off interest-free loans under the federal and land program. However, they need to pay half of the amount within five years of graduation. Students pursuing vocational and technical training can also avail of loan facilities. Unlike in many other countries Germany doesn’t boast of elite institutions. Rather, some departments in particular universities have quite a lot of reputation. For example, University of Cologne is famous for its economics faculty.

Application procedures, requirements and deadlines depend on the course one is going to pursue. Applications for different courses are usually made once in a year. Applications are usually made a few months before the programme starts.
