Coimbatore: Bharathiar University has recently started a distance learning centre in Washington (United States) and Toronto (Canada).
This was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of the varsity G. Thiruvasagam during an interaction with media persons. The university has already established its centres in Kuwait, Dubai and Singapore.
Mr. Thiruvasagam said, "People living in theses countries have shown their interest in setting up such centres. They are interested in courses such as MBA , MCA, BCA, and BBA, besides the integrated four-year B.Sc. programme which the university plans to launch in the next academic year".
The infrastructure and faculty will be managed locally while study material will be sent from the university. Examinations will be conducted and degrees awarded by the university.
Around 2,500 to 3,000 students are likely to enroll at the learning centres by the next year. A three-year degree programme in Aviation Science will also be offered jointly by the Bharathiar University and University of Maryland from the next academic year.
Students pursuing the course will study for two years at an affiliated college of Bharathiar University and one year at the University of Maryland.
Colleges with adequate infrastructure and faculty will be permitted to offer the course.
