PAU, MERADO ink MoU for joint research programme

Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Tuesday entered into an agreement with the Mechanical Engineering Research and Development Organization (MERADO), an extension centre of the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur, to collaborate in projects in the area of design and development of farm machinery.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by Dr. P.S. Minhas, Director of Research, PAU and Cdr. V.R. Dahake, Scientist in-charge of MERADO in the presence of PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Prof. V.K. Sehgal, Coordinator Research (Engg.) and other dignitaries from PAU and MERADO.

Terming the event as a historic one, Dr. Kang, said that collaboration, rather than competition, help each other. He specified that areas concerning 'jatropha' growing, conservation agriculture and precision agriculture are of interest to PAU.

He mentioned that PAU has sent young scientists to advanced institutes abroad for training in upcoming areas. He said that a scientist from College of Agricultural Engineering is being sent to Colorado State University for training in the area of precision agriculture.

Dr. Kang hoped that the partnership of PAU with MERADO in the identified mutually beneficial areas will greatly help the Punjab farmers in the long run.

Speaking on this occasion, Cdr Dahake said that with the signing of the MoU, the scientists of the two organizations would work jointly in the area of Farm Power and Machinery and that his organization looks forward in collaborating in other areas also.

He appreciated the role of PAU in green revolution improving the agricultural economy of the state.

Dr. S.R. Verma, former Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering, who was present on the occasion, congratulated PAU and MERADO in coming together in the areas of research and development. He said that the MoU was first of its kind and called it like marrying of the strengths of the two great organizations.

Dr. Minhas expressed that under the joint programme, research areas including cost effective machinery development, processing, energy, bio-fuels would receive an impetus.

Assuring the cooperation from PAU scientists, Dr. Minhas said that the synergies of the two organizations would be capitalized.

Dr. I.S. Dhaliwal, Head, Department of Farm Power and Machinery in his vote of thanks said that the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will sponsor various research projects on development of farm machinery under this alliance.
