The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the largest universities in the world. It was set up under the IGNOU act passed by the Parliament in 1985, as a Central University. It was established to provide open and distance educational facilities to the millions who did not have any reach to the conventional educational systems. Its aim was to improve India's human resource by the means of providing education. For fulfilling its dream of "democratizing higher education" it has tried to impart education through various flexible modes. IGNOU has encouraged the setting up of open and distance learning centers all over the country. Apart from imparting education it also acts as a national resource center for the promotion and development of open universities and distance learning centers.
IGNOU, presently serves about 1.5 million students with a large network of schools of study and regional study centers. It has its branches in about 35 countries. It has 11 schools of study, 58 regional centers, 7 sub regional centers, 1400 study centers and 41 overseas center. Students of IGNOU comprises of about 10% of students pursuing higher studies.
