Govt to setup Ayurvedic institute on lines of AIIMS

Delhi: The Central Government has approved the establishment of an All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) at Sarita Vihar, New Delhi as a Centre of Excellence focused on fundamental research, drug safety evaluation, standardization, quality control and scientific validation of Ayurvedic medicine.

The institute would also offer post-graduate and doctoral courses in the aforesaid disciplines.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Mrs. Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Health & family Welfare said that the institute will have a 200-bed research and referral hospital for facilitating clinical research.

"The All India Institute of Ayurveda will be setup on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)", Lakshmi added.

It would be fully functional by the end of the Eleventh Five Year Plan i.e. by March, 2012.

When fully functional, the institute will treat about 250-300 O.P.D. patients daily in addition to IPD patients initially.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has also said that six new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand will be ready in the next three years.

"The AIIMS in Bihar would not only help people of the state but also residents of Nepal and Assam who lack good healthcare facilities", he added.
