50 pc of Punjab primary students unable to read Punjabi

Chandigarh: More than 50 percent students studying in primary schools of Punjab are not able to read a single story in Punjabi; around 25 percent are not able to write Punjabi letters and 40-70 percent students are not able to subtract and divide.
This data has been complied from more than 11,000 primary schools of the state. The survey is a part of the 'Parho Punjab' project under the 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan'.
In the survey, students were tested for reading of letters, words, paragraphs and stories.
The data says that more than 6 percent students in class V could not even identify the numbers correctly.
76 percent of students studying in class I could not read the letters; 45 percent students studying in class III are not aware how to read words and around 53 percent of students studying in class V could not read a basic story in Punjabi.
Krishna Kumar, Director General School Education and state Project Director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan said, "Now we have complete information about each and every child so it will be helpful for us to implement the Parho Punjab project. The survey result will be the baseline from where we have to begin".
The Punjab Education Department, which is under fire for poor results and dismal quality of education in the Government schools, had launched the "Parho Punjab" project in association with NGO Pratham.
Under the project, government teachers would be trained to improve the education standards at the primary level and ensure that all the students who pass out of class V are well-versed in the languages and basic mathematical and scientific concepts.
