ISRO to launch remote sensing Resourcesat in February

Chennai: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is getting ready to launch Resourcesat 2, a remote sensing earth observation satellite, by the end of February, officials said on Monday.

Remote sensing satellites send back pictures and other data for various uses. India is a major player in providing such data in the global market.

The Resourcesat-2 will replace Resourcesat-1 launched in 2003, which has outlived its original mission life of five years.

According to ISRO officials, the satellite has reached the Sriharikota rocket launch centre around 80 km from Chennai and tests are being conducted.

The satellites will be carried by the ISRO's polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV). The launch will be between February 20-25 in the morning.

The PSLV will also be carrying two other small satellites made in Singapore and Russia.

With nine orbiting satellites and the tenth one to join in February, India has the largest number of remote sensing satellites in the world providing imageries in a variety of spatial resolutions.

The remote sensing satellites currently operational are: Resourcesat-1, Cartosat-2B, Oceansat-2, RISAT-2, Cartosat-2A, IMS-1, Cartosat-2, Resourcesat-1 and TES.

For some time Resourcesat-2 and Resourcesat-1 will work together before the later is fully replaced, the official said.

Compared to Resourcesat-1, the multispectral swath of Resourcesat-2 has been enhanced from 23 km to 70 km based on user needs.

Suitable changes, including miniaturization in payload electronics, have been incorporated in Resourcesat-2, said the official. IANS

Malaysian team to study Kerala mosques

Malappuram, Kerala: A Malaysian team will arrive next month to study mosque structures in Kerala as a collaborative venture between the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM) and Madin Islamic Academy (MIA) here.

In what is believed to be its first such accord with an Indian institution, the IIUM has entered into an agreement for academic cooperation with the MIA.

A team from IIUM is expected to arrive in the state next month to commence the groundwork of a research study on mosque structures in Kerala.

The MIA in press release here on Monday said the agreement was inked between IIUM Rector Syed Arabi Idid and Madin chairman Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleelul Bukhari in Malaysia.

"We are very happy to sign this agreement with an institution from India, which is the second largest Muslim populated country in the world, and hopeful of getting more students and exchange potentials," said Idid.

The IIUM is a joint venture of the Malaysian government and Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), which is the umbrella body of 57 Muslim countries.

Established in 1983 with 153 students, IIUM has become a premier Islamic university with 30,000 students. It offers bachelor's, master's and Ph.D courses.

The agreement is for exchanging students and teachers, facilitating research and publication in various fields, conducting international seminars and workshops and credit transfer between faculties.

This will also enable students from India to pursue their higher studies in 50 faculties and 150 academic programmes of the IIUM.

Madin Academy, Malappuram, established in 1997, is one of the growing educational institutions from Kerala with 10,500 students and 25 educational and charity ventures.

Bukhari said this was a new feather in the cap of the developing educational culture of India. "It is not only an agreement between two institutions, but a treaty to exchange knowledge and virtue imparted by more than 50 OIC countries," said Bukhari. IANS

5 tips to protect yourself on Facebook

These days, Facebook may be the single best way online to keep in touch with friends, associates, far-flung family members, and people with similar interests. But if you're not careful, it's probably also the site most likely to get you into trouble.

Virtually every week, there's another news report about employers using Facebook to evaluate or screen employees or potential employees, making assumptions about character, trustworthiness, or conduct based upon Facebook postings or "friends."

Girlfriends and boyfriends, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours can check out each other's Facebook pages with ease, possibly jumping to erroneous conclusions about what shows up.

So how can you enjoy what Facebook has to offer while limiting your risk? Follow these steps:
Know your privacy settings

Whether you're active or not on Facebook, if you haven't visited the Privacy Settings area, you should put this on the top of your to-do list. In short, Facebook pages get indexed very well by the major search engines, and unless you know both what's on your page and what could be on your page as a result of friends' postings, you should take control pronto.

From Facebook, click Account in the upper right-hand corner, and from the drop-down menu, choose Privacy Settings. The Choose Your Privacy Settings page opens. Under Sharing on Facebook, go directly to the "Customise settings" link at the bottom of the Settings table, and make the most appropriate selections for what you wish to share with the world, your friends, and friends of your friends.

But don't stop there. Under the Connecting on Facebook section, click the "View Settings" link. The Connecting on Facebook page appears, and from there you make important decisions such as whether you can be found as a result of a standard search on Facebook and whether others can view your list of friends.
Watch what you post
Consider Facebook a close relative of email. That means that anything you say, any picture you post, any member you befriend can be made public without too much trouble - regardless of your privacy settings. In the digital age, after all, everyone knows how to copy and paste, and screen captures can easily link you with a post on your wall. If you really want something to remain private, don't post it on Facebook.

Reign in third-party apps

A growing number of third-party social networking applications and websites -- such as TweetDeck for Twitter and Digsby for instant messaging -- are asking for access to your Facebook account so that updates can be sent two ways. Don't allow such access requests unless you know what you're getting into. Using third-party tools that are tied into Facebook might make you appear "online" on Facebook far more often than you actually are, for example - a potentially embarrassing situation.

Even when you do allow third-party access to your Facebook account, it's a good idea to visit the Apps and Websites section of your Facebook Privacy Settings page to see which programmes have been granted access. From Facebook, click Account, Privacy Settings, and then under Apps and Websites, click the "Edit your settings" link. Adjust the settings appropriately.

Houseclean regularly
It may seem like a fine idea to accept all of your five most recent friend requests. But inevitably one or two of them will prove to be a nuisance, as they hog your wall with posts and come to resemble spammers with the number of updates they provide.

Pruning friends is nothing to be ashamed of, and you should do it on a regular basis. Don't worry about whether your friends will be notified if you remove them. Facebook does not send out a notice to people you have removed as friends.

Deactivate if you don't use
If keeping an eye on your Facebook account is proving to be too much trouble, or if you started a Facebook account and never use it, take the time at least to deactivate your account. Doing so will rid you of the worry of what does and does not show up on your Facebook page. To deactivate, click Account in the upper-right hand corner of your page, and select Account Settings. At the very bottom of the choices on the resulting screen, find Deactivate Account, and click the "deactivate" link to the right.

Note, however, that deactivating your Facebook account is not the same as deleting it. With a deactivated account, you might still receive emails from the site. To delete your account, you'll need to visit the Help center (under Account), search for the "permanently delete" question, follow the link, and read the directions. Or you can simply click this link: http://on.fb.me/3qsIFP. If you're logged in to Facebook, you'll be taken directly to the Delete page.

How to Cite a Website Using MLA Format

When you are conducting research for a term paper or longer-term research project, you may use popular websites as source materials as well as more traditional materials such as reference books, scholarly journals and class lecture notes and materials. While many websites are highly specialized, most educational websites are intended for the general reading public and usually do not require the same amount of expertise on the parts of their readers or reporters that scholarly journals and publications require. However, they are still valid sources of facts and information. If you use multiple pages from the same website or use a website with only one main page, then you can cite the entire website rather than the individual pages. You must be sure to cite all sources of this type on your Works Cited page with your other source materials so that a reader can find the information that helped you draw your conclusions. MLA is a good format to use when you have many different types of source materials because it has a fairly standard appearance and is equally easy to implement and utilize.

Underline the name of the site, and follow it with a period. The name of the site is generally placed at the top of the page, and you can often find it directly above the browser window that hosts the URL. If your word processor will not support font formatting like underlining or italics, then use an underscore symbol to indicate that the name of the site should be underlined. For example, if you used a website titled "Delicious Decisions," then your citation should start out: _Delicious Decisions_.
#
2 Follow with the date of the most recent posting or revision of the site. If this information is completely inaccessible, then contact the site administrator. If this fails, then use the copyright information located on the bottom of the main page of the site. If possible, this date should be written in the form "day month year." The month can be abbreviated by the first three letters. If the website was last updated on October 4, 2007, then your citation should now read: _Delicious Decisions_. 4 Oct 2007.

3 List the name of the institution affiliated with the site. This information can often be found at the bottom of the main page if it is not located near the title at the top. For example, if your website is affiliated with the American Heart Association, then your citation should now read: _Delicious Decisions_. 4 Oct 2007. American Heart Association.

4 Add the date that you accessed the website. This date should be written in the following form and order "day, month, year." If you accessed the website on July 5, 2008, then your citation should now read: _Delicious Decisions_. 4 Oct 2007. American Heart Association. 5 Jul 2008.

5 Finish with the URL of the website. You can copy this directly out of your browser window and paste it into your Works Cited page, then place it in brackets.

Nitish unlikely to visit Columbia varsity

PATNA: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said that there was little possibility of his visiting the US to participate in the 7th India Business Conference to be organized by Columbia University s The Columbia Business School in New York on April 1.

Talking to the media, Nitish expressed his gratitude to the organizers for inviting him to deliver the keynote address, but said that he was hugely pre-occupied to spare time to visit abroad. he said.

The School had requested him to speak on `The Urgency of Inclusive Growth and My Vision of Bihar at the conference on `India: An Honest Conversation .

Incidentally, Nitish after becoming the CM in 2005, visited only one foreign country. He made a trip to Mauritius in 2007 with a delegation comprising some of his cabinet colleagues and bureaucrats.

Time running out for duped TVU students

Washington, Jan 30 (PTI) Hundreds of Indian students, duped by a California-based "sham" university, are franticallyknocking at the doors of colleges begging for admission intheir desperate attempt to save their academic careers andavoid deportation back home.

These students, said to be around 1,500, were studyingat the California-based Tri Valley University, which was shutdown by the federal authorities last week after investigationrevealed that this relatively new academic institution hadindulged in massive and wire fraud and helped foreignnationals illegally acquire immigration status.

Following a raid at the University building inPleasanton, California, federal authorities swooped down onits students 95 per cent of who are from India, mostly fromAndhra Pradesh for questioning and interrogation.

Immigration attorneys and Indian American communityleaders who have been helping these students told PTI thatscores of them have been a detained, released on bond, andmany of them have been installed with Intensive SupervisionAppearance Program (radio tags).

"Time is fast running out for these students," saidRam Mohan Konda of the American Telugu Association.

"These students do not know where to go. They arebeing asked for thousands of dollars in bond and. At the sametime they have to join any university as soon as possible soas to maintain their visa status and complete their studies,"Konda said.

Konda, who has been in personal contact with a numberof these students, said that they are not able to get anyfresh admission because the SEVIS has been blocked.

Student and Exchange Visitor Information System(SEVIS) of the Department of Homeland Security is the webbased programme to track the foreign students in the US.

Until it is active, no university and academicinstitution can admit any foreign students to their campus.

Also since the fall classes have already begun, itwould be difficult for these students to get admission intoany college or universities after a week or so, Konda said, adding that authorities have to act fast otherwise most ofthese students would be left with no other option but to goback voluntarily or be deported.

In some cases students are being asked for bonddeposits running into thousands of dollars and a large numberof them have been served with Notice to Appear (which isconsidered as the first step towards the start of deportationprocess).

Raj Akula, a Texas-based attorney, said that he knowsat least 20 such students who have been subject to detention.

While many of them have been released on bail, a fewof them are still in the detention centres as they have notbeen able to furnish the bond money.

These students are spread across the country -- Ohio,Illinois, Washington and Pennsylvania.

One of the students was released early this week froma Ohio detention centre only after he furnished a bond of aUSD 22,000, Akola said refraining from identifying thestudent, who do not want to be named in the press. (more) PTI

India condemns US for radio-tagging duped students

India has condemned US authorities for tagging Indian students who, it says, were duped by a fake university.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishan said Indian students were "not criminals" and that radio collars put around their ankles must be removed.

US authorities have shut down the Tri-Valley University near San Francisco, accusing it of an immigration fraud.

The university has more than 1,500 students and reports say nearly 95% of them are from India.

Most of the students are reported to be from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and many of them now face deportation.

In the state capital, Hyderabad, members of the All India Students' Federation have demonstrated against the Tri-Valley University near the US consulate.

"We demand that the US government initiate severe action against those officials responsible for this inhuman act," Mr Krishna told reporters in the southern city of Bangalore on Sunday.

"Indian students are not criminals. The radio collars should immediately be removed," he said.

"We have conveyed to the US authorities that the students, most of who are victims themselves, must be treated fairly and reasonably," the ministry said in a statement.

The students have been forced to wear radio collars around their ankles so that the US authorities can keep track of their movements.

5 dangerous websites for kids

Want to keep your children away from cyberbullying? Well, below are the names of websites that kids should never visit.

Experts have suggested that parents can protect their kids from websites that abound with the worst of the Web: rampant insults, slurs, demeaning topics and ultimately cyberbullying.

Here are the bottom five sites experts say are the 'dark alleys' of the Internet.

formspring.me
Intended as a question and answer website with deep ties to such social networks as Facebook, Twitter and Google's Blogger, formspring.me is anything but innocent.

Maria Scheimreif, a school counselor with Medford Memorial School in Medford, N.J., advises parents to steer their children clear of it. "We found that children could remain anonymous much easier on the site than on Facebook," FoxNews.com quoted her as saying.

"They would post questions and send them to others -- and the only purpose of the questions seemed to be to hurt other's feelings," she added.

Chatroulette
In theory, Chatroulette connects random strangers around the world for video chats, shortening the distance between them, but in reality, experts cited it as simply dangerous, a "predator's paradise."

Gwenn O'Keeffe, the author of the new book CyberSafe: Protecting and Empowering Kids in the Digital World, said that Chatroulette has spawned a number of clones-including JayDoe and Zupyo and CamCarousel-all of which parents should watch out for.

Facebook
That's right, Facebook. With more than half a billion users, it's the world's most popular social-networking site. But is it appropriate for your kids? "I'm leery of kids under 13 going on," warned O'Keefe.

"It's against the terms of service, and young kids online interacting with older kids places them at risk for content exposure inappropriate for their age-and cyber issues such as privacy violations and cyberbullying," she said.

JuicyCampus
Sites that target college students can often be enticing to kids. And with lists like the top ten sluts and biggest idiots on campus," they are often wildly inappropriate," warned Raskin.

txtspoof.com
txtspoof.com
A new startup seems designed to facilitate cyberbullying, said experts. TxtSpoof lets you send a text message that appears to come from someone else's cell phone. O'Keeffe advises parents to train their kids in the appropriate ways to send texts.

NCC strength to grow to 15 lakh - Prime Minister

New Delhi: The National Cadet Corps (NCC), India's tri-services movement to groom school and college students into disciplined citizens, will grow in strength by two lakh and touch the 15-lakh mark soon, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Friday.

"I am very happy to inform you that in recognition of the good work done by the National Cadet Corps, the government has sanctioned an enhancement in its authorized cadet strength from 13 lakh to 15 lakh," Singh said addressing the cadets at the Prime Minister's NCC Rally.

The cadets have been in Delhi for the last one month as part of the annual Republic Day camp and had marched as a contingent in the 62nd Republic Day parade down Rajpath on Wednesday.

The increase in the strength of the NCC, a voluntary organization, will add five new group headquarters and 40 new units in schools and colleges across the country.

The NCC is also planning to raise its current girls cadet strength from the present 24 percent to 33 percent in the next five years and ultimately achieve 50 percent recruitment of girls in its units.

Noting that NCC was "a proud symbol" of national integration and values of discipline, patriotic service and team work, the prime minister said he commended the organization for its praiseworthy role in grooming the country's young men and women into disciplined and patriotic leaders of tomorrow.

"I have traveled to many countries but rarely have I come across young men and women who are brighter, better informed and more infused with hope, passion and values than in India," he added.

Taj Hotel is honored to be part of Harvard study

Mumbai: The Taj Hotel is honored to be part of a Harvard Business School case study following the inclusion of the heroic response of its employees during the 26/11 terror attacks here, a hotel spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are honored to be a part of the Harvard Business School case study in which the spirit, loyalty and resilience of our employees during the crisis has been recognized as an exemplary display of leadership," the spokesperson said.

The multimedia case study 'Terror at the Taj Bombay: Customer-Centric Leadership' by professor Rohit Deshpande of the Harvard Business School (HBS) documents the bravery and resourcefulness shown by rank-and-file employees during the attack.

"The Tata group has a long standing association with HBS. Deshpande, during one of his engagements with the group, felt that the story provides a great opportunity to showcase unique leadership in crisis management and in this he saw the potential of a great case study coming out from one of the new emerging economies.

"The details were shared with HBS to form a multimedia case study and the case was first presented in the fall of 2010 where senior management from Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces were invited to be present for an interactive session with the students," he added.

The study focuses on how most employees of the hotel stayed put at their positions during the attacks and how they saved several guests of the hotels, thereby jeopardizing their own safety and with some sacrificing their lives.

Ten Pakistani terrorists killed 166 people in an audacious attack in Mumbai on November 26, 2008. As many as 12 employees of the hotel are said to have been killed in the attack, though the exact figures have never been revealed.

One example of the resilience of the employees was by Karambir Singh Kang, the hotel's general manager. He led from the front by continuing to supervise rescue operations at the hotel and helping numerous guests to escape even after losing his wife and two sons in the attack.

The study says the level of loyalty and dedication cannot be replicated elsewhere. IANS
