Nursery admissions to begin on January 1

New Delhi: In what comes as good news for parents who have been anxiously waiting for any news regarding when the nursery admission procedure would begin, the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi has announced that the nursery admission procedure for the academic session 2011-2012 will begin from January 1 next year.

The nursery admission procedure has been delayed by about 15 days.

Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Monday said that the decision was taken after a meeting between several school associations such as the Federation of Public Schools and National Progressive Schools Conference.

According to Lovely, the meeting was held in order to hear the concerns of various schools regarding the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) guidelines in the nursery admission procedure. "The admission process will now begin from January 1 because the RTE guidelines for nursery admissions are still being formulated," he said.

During the meeting, the school associations were asked to give their suggestions in order to help the directorate determine the different criteria on which the conduction of the nursery admissions would be based.

The news regarding the delay in nursery admissions garnered a mixed response from parents and school administrations. The nursery admission process had last year begun on December 15 and ended on March 31. the deadline for the completion of the admission process is the same for this year too.

Last week, the ministry of human resource development (HRD) had issued guidelines for admissions according to the right to education act According to the guidelines, no school would be allowed to profile or screen their students before admission in any way.

The guidelines also direct schools to have categorizations based on "just and rational basis" like alumni, sibling, girl child, etc. However, the guidelines make it clear that no schools will be allowed to conduct interviews of either parents or the students. Hence the admission procedure had been made to be quite random, similar to a draw.

This had led to much confusion among parents as well as school administrations, who had then asked the DoE to clear the doubts regarding the admission process.

CBSE schools to have websites with complete details soon

New Delhi: Thanks to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), parents and students will soon be able to evaluate a school's conformity with several CBSE guidelines such as academic, infrastructural, safety and other byelaws online.

All schools affiliated to CBSE have been ordered by the Board to begin their own websites highlighting their levels of compliance of all of CBSE norms, which would include details about teachers, student strength, contact details of administrators, etc.

CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said in a letter sent to all CBSE affiliated schools that they must comply with the orders of the board within six months and also prepare annual reports which they can publish on their websites and make them openly available online.

The CBSE currently has over 10,500 schools affiliated to it in not only India but also abroad in a few foreign countries. These schools have also been asked by the board to specify timelines by when they will have complied with certain CBSE byelaws that they are currently unable to meet.

The affiliation byelaws stipulated by the CBSE are related to the governance structure, land area as well as other physical infrastructure and facilities, salaries of employees, teacher-to-student ratio, policies of admission and fee structure adopted by the school.

According to sources, the move was initiated by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, who is currently aiming at ensuring more transparency in all educational institutions.

Several technical institutions such as engineering and management schools have been asked by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to place details of their teachers, students, infrastructure, fee policy and governance structure on heir respective websites.

The letter from CBSE that had been sent to schools mentioned that it had been made mandatory by the board for all schools to develop their own websites that contain comprehensive information about the schools and their managements.

An order dated August 5, 2010 from the Central Information Commission also states that all CBSE affiliated schools are required to place the status of the implementation of the BSE norms on their websites.

Separate body for conducting CAT soon - IIMs

New Delhi: For the better conduction and management of the Common Admission Test (CAT) in future, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have planned to establish a separate body for the purpose.

IIM Lucknow Director Devi Singh was in Delhi on Thursday and said that the IIMs intend to set up a distinct body within the IIM structure for CAT. This body will be run and managed by professionals and would be solely responsible for the conduction of the management entrance test.

He further added that the organization could be established under Section 25 of the Companies Act and that the details for the same are being worked out. "We have definite plans in this direction for setting up the body," he said.

Another major plan by the IIMs involves CAT, which has more than two lakh takers every year, to be made similar to the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) so that it can be conducted more than once a year.

The CAT Convener this year was IIM Lucknow professor Himanshu Rai. Over 2.04 lakh candidates appeared for the CAT tests this year which were conducted over a window period of 20 days from October 27 to November 24.

Last year, the CAT had been made a computer based examination instead of a paper-pen test format but had witnessed several teething problems in the form of technical glitches and errors. However, this year, the online CAT was conducted successfully and no glitches or errors were reported.

Prof. Himanshu Rai informed that along with Prometric, the organization that was responsible for the online conduction of the test in 2009 and 2010, the IIMs were also considering modifications in the CAT format from 2011.

These changes would include making the CAT vouchers available for sale online and reduction of time period between reporting at the test centre and commencement of the test, which was 90 minutes this year.

Prof. Rai further added that there would always be scope of improvement in the conduction of CAT. "We are working towards making the test as candidate friendly as possible," he said.

IIM Kozhikode to create Indian Business History museum

Bangalore: IIM Kozhikode (IIM K), one of India's premier inclusive Business School will embark on an ambitious journey to create a Museum of Indian Business History. This museum will house business related historical artifacts, objects, sculptures, models, photographs, documents, illustrations, etc. This initiative is unique, monumental and a significant step in acknowledging the contribution of India's Business Leaders in the making of Corporate India.

The objective behind the museum is to inspire the aspiring business entrepreneurs in the country and show them the path to success through innovative ideas, diligence and perseverance. India in the pre-liberalization days was a victim of trade barriers and restricted trade policy.

IIM-K has requested around 100 CEOs and leaders of major business houses including Tatas, Ambanis, Birlas for their humble contribution to this museum. Most of them are expected to contribute to the museum. The Institute will formally open the museum on its Foundation Day in 2011. The initial investment for this project is estimated to be around 'one crore'.

According to Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, IIM-K Director, "Acknowledging the landmark achievements that has been scored by esteemed corporates over the past several decades, and the invaluable contributions that have been given to our country, it is our earnest wish that these corporates participate in the making of this museum, by contributing some significant historical objects and artifacts for which due acknowledgement will be attributed to the organization," he said.

He further added, "It is our endeavor to consolidate and conserve the rare treasure of India's invaluable wealth, the memorabilia of Indian Business History for our posterity."
The Institute desires to, for an instance an original letter written by JRD Tata or a pen used by him that has had a significant impact on India's business history to feature in their museum.

IIM K is deemed to take utmost care and show case these artefacts with professional expertise in their world class library premises. Within a short span of over a decade, IIMK has emerged as a center of excellence in management with a strong focus on global and cross cultural issues addressing both business demands and social concerns. IIM K is now a Centre of Excellence in Academic Leadership as part of the Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative (SOKI), an ambitious academic leadership programme with Yale University launched in 2010.

Starting in 1997 with a batch of 42 students in its Postgraduate Programme (PGP), the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) is on a high growth trajectory today, offering widest range of academic programmes in the field of management education.

PGP student's intake for 2009 was 309 students i.e. 5 times in 7 years thus making it the fastest growing management school in the country to reach that landmark. This was done keeping the quality of the programme high, as the Institute continued to maintain its sound placement record, ranking among the top 5 institutes in the country in 2008. Classes in AMU's Murshidabad campus from January 2011

Ahiran (West Bengal): Classes in the Aligarh Muslim University's (AMU) campus in this rural belt of Murshidabad district will start from January, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Saturday.

"The classes will begin from this academic year itself in January. The AMU will initially work out of a big rented building which also has residential facilities for students," Mukherjee said after laying the foundation stone of the campus here, about 60 km from district headquarters Bahrampur.

He said the AMU campus would go a long way in increasing education standards in the backward district as it will impart education from the nursery to the post-doctoral level.

Mukherjee said the project report was complete and while he had granted a budgetary support of Rs.25 crore, the human resource development ministry has sanctioned another Rs.25 crore for the campus.

"(A total of) 265 acres have been earmarked and handed over to the university authorities for the project with help from the state government and union water resources ministry. I want a very modern first grade campus. We want to set up an educational complex for higher education that will benefit the people of eastern India," he said.

Describing knowledge and education as the main ingredients for ushering in comprehensive development of all sections of people, he said: "The faster we can reach high standards of education to the people, the faster will the nation go forward".

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said the full-fledged university campus will be set up gradually.

"We are proud to have the Aligarh Muslim University here. It is a big name as an institute for the Muslims with 30,000 students, 1700 professors, 325 courses and 95 departments. When the Murshidabad campus comes up, it will help in expanding education in our state".

"In our state we have tried every way to make education modern and secular. Aligarh Muslim University's education system is also developed, modern and secular. We want such a university," he added. IANS

Super 30 founder to meet 'Titanic' director James Cameron

Patna: Anand Kumar, who founded Bihar's free coaching centre Super 30 and helped many students enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), will share his experience with Hollywood producer and director James Cameron next month.

"I will share the platform with James Cameron during the INK Conference next month," Anand Kumar told the sources on Sunday.

The conference is held in association with Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED), a global set of conferences aimed at promoting innovation in diverse fields.

This year's edition will be held in the city of Lavasa in Maharashtra from December 10-12.

Anand Kumar said it was a matter of great pride that a teacher like him was given an opportunity to speak before such distinguished personalities.

"It is an honor for my state also, where I grew up and started my institute," he said.

The entry fee for the international conference will be Rs.1 lakh, event organizer Deepti Nair said.

"There is going to be a large number of people from all over the world, who are coming to see and hear these great personalities," she said.

According to her, James Cameron would be the star attraction of the programme.

"He has made many films such as 'Titanic', 'Avatar' and 'The Terminator' and has won many awards, including the Oscars," she said.

Nair also said that Anand Kumar is seen as a hero, not only in India, but also abroad.

"He is viewed as a person who, despite not being able to go to Cambridge due to financial constraints, did not give up and instead, became a ray of hope for the talented students from poor sections of the society. He is bringing about a social change," she said.

In the last three years, all 30 students of Super 30 have made it to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by IITs. Since 2003, 212 students have made it to the IITs.

Anand Kumar, who himself missed a chance to study at Cambridge University because he didn't have enough money, gives full scholarships to every annual batch of 30 students.

They have to pass a competitive test to get into Super 30 and then commit themselves to a year of 16-hour study each day.

Anand Kumar, who started the Ramanujam School of Mathematics in 1992, founded the Super 30 in 2002. IANS

Air Force and Navy now in IGNOU's community college scheme ambit

New Delhi: The community college scheme of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), which aims to empower individuals by providing educational certification, is being extended to the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, a statement by the varsity said on Wednesday.

According to the statement, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will soon be signed between the varsity and the two forces which will "empower the servicemen".Educational certification will be awarded to the servicemen, recognizing the "in service training" done by them and in turn provide opportunity for a second career option.

A similar MoU was signed between IGNOU and the Indian Army earlier, as per which the Army-IGNOU community colleges will function as autonomous bodies conducting examinations.

Major General S.P. Kochar, additional director general-personnel services of the Indian Army, said, "The IGNOU community college scheme allows the in-service training of jawans to be recognized, which helps the soldiers to get better career opportunities post retirement." IANS

Government considering common entrance for central varsities

New Delhi: A common entrance test for central universities is on the cards of the government as vice chancellors of these varsities agree that modification is needed in the present system.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari Friday said there was a consensus on the need for modifications in the system of admission to undergraduate and post-graduate courses as the present system is strenuous for students and parents.

"The recommendations made by a committee of vice chancellors in regard to a Common Entrance Test in central universities was discussed recently at a conference. There was a consensus that the present college/institution specific system of admission places immense burden on the students/applicants as well as parents," Purandeswari said.

"The admission procedure needs to be modified. For admission to undergraduate courses, it was felt that the marks obtained in Class 12 and the scores obtained in a common national level aptitude test should get appropriate weightage," she said.

"For admission to post-graduate programmes, the basis could be marks obtained at the graduate level and a common test to assess the aptitude and knowledge in the subject concerned," she said. IANS

Online students as good as classroom peers in studies

Washington: Online students perform as well as their regular classroom counterparts, says a new study.

A University of Nebraska study in US gauged students' perception and performance in three undergraduate science courses having both online and classroom versions.

It found that online students did not feel a sense of cohesion, community spirit, trust or interaction -- elements that have been shown to foster effective classroom learning.

But they also reported performing as well as their regular counterparts and at the end of the day, their grades were equivalent to their in-person peers, reports The Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education.

"Previous research has shown that students who feel like they are connected to their classmates tend to enjoy their classes more and ultimately get better grades," said study author Robert Vavala, an agronomy graduate student at the University of Nebraska.

"We wanted to determine if online students felt the same way about their classes that face-to-face students did and if so, whether or not that affected their grades," Vavala added.

Researchers assembled the data from a survey of more than 250 students enrolled in three different entry-level science courses at a large Midwestern public university. The same instructors taught both versions of each of the courses, according to a Nebraska statement. IANS
