How to tackle the online CAT-2010

The most pressing question on the minds of the students is 'How do I tackle the Online CAT?' However, the most obvious thing that one notices in the question is the emphasis on the 'Online' aspect more than the one on 'CAT'. Well the answer to this question is to keep it simple and not to worry about the 'Online' format as much as the 'content' of the paper.

One can get familiar with the Online format through the "CAT 2010 Practice Test" on http://catiim.in/ and through online mock tests.

The key to doing well on CAT has always been

1) Sound preparation

2) Getting the Basics right

3) Plenty of practice on Sectional Tests

4) Taking a good number of Full Length Mock CATs (Online) simulating all possibilities

5) Self-belief

'Sound preparation' encompasses looking at questions from previous years' CATs and understanding the 'syllabus' of CAT. First, one should make a list of all topics/areas on which questions have been asked in Quantitative, Logic & Data Interpretation and the Verbal section.

Then, one should assess whether one is 'proficient', 'average' or 'needs improvement' in each of those areas. The areas that fall in the third category is what one should look at quickly addressing rather than hoping that questions from that area do not come in CAT2010!

The IIMs, through CAT, test the students on their understanding of basic concepts and this is where 'Getting the basics right' plays a vital role. Often students look for the toughest material to practice without realising that their understanding of concepts as simple as LCM & HCF is not as good as they think it is.

CAT has often trapped students with simple and elegant questions that probe into their understanding of the basics. A quick recap of all the chapters in Quantitative and the concepts involved in each of them would go a long way in rectifying this.

One key aspect of CAT has been its unpredictability in terms of the pattern, the question types, areas emphasised and the difficulty level. However, CAT 2010 has eased the unpredictability to an extent by mentioning the pattern beforehand (3 sections with a total of 60 questions).

Students should try to strengthen their performance in each section in terms of speed and accuracy by practicing on a good number of sectional tests. Students should also ensure that they get enough practice of all kinds of full length papers through a comprehensive Mock series program.

This ensures that one is exposed to relevant and plausible question types which increases one's capacity to deal with any surprise in CAT2010. However taking lots of mocks is not the only preparation strategy - analysing the mocks after the test is over and learning from ones mistakes is, in fact, a key step, which students often overlook.

Finally, the most important ingredient in tackling CAT 2010 successfully is self-belief - the conviction that the effort that one has put in over the past months will yield positive results.

Constant worrying about the end result only makes the task much more difficult to accomplish.

So keep your spirits high and elevate your level of preparation in the next one month leading upto CAT. Success will belong to those who can follow this advice religiously and keep up their belief quotient.

CAT 2010: No rush, smooth ride on Day One

Wednesday was the first day of the Combined Admission Test (CAT) for entry into prestigious business schools in the country. Examinees emerged from the 10 test centres in Bangalore much relieved that the test was conducted smoothly, and that there were no technical glitches. Last year, when the CAT was conducted online the first time, many test centres reported snags in the computers that prevented candidates from completing the test.

The organisers of the online CAT test, the Indian Institutes of Management and Prometric India, can now heave a sigh of relief too. The likelihood that the testing process will be smooth is high now. Well begun, they hope, is half done.

CAT 2010 will end on November 24. After the bad press that the organisation of the test got last year, the IIMs and their US-based partner, Prometric, went the extra mile to ensure that the test was conducted smoothly this year. Computers at the test centres were checked, to ensure that all the software used was licenced, and that the anti-virus programmes had not expired. Even the hardware was checked to ensure that candidates did not face any trouble.

Many candidates that DNA spoke to said that the test had not posed any technical problems. Navigating the online test was a smooth affair for many candidates. Surya Kumar, a candidate who took the test at the Garden City College said that he faced no problems at all. “It was well-organised. Supervisors posted at the labs were well informed, and help was at hand for all candidates,” said Kumar.

Srinivas Belvi, who has been coaching candidates for the CAT, said that this year’s experience at the test centres was a sea-change from what was experienced last year. “It was a good first day, first show. The organisers of CAT 2010 left no stone unturned to make the experience a smooth one for candidates this time. Last year, it was all so messy. Several students could not write the test for three consecutive days in Bangalore,” Belvi said.

Hasini M, a software professional who wrote the test in the morning session, initially expressed apprehension about the test going online. Emerging from the Garden City College centre, however, Hasini sang a different tune, saying that the test went off well, and that she was hopeful of a good result. “I was praying that I don’t have to face any technical glitches. It went off smoothly today, and I’m really happy,” she said. A few candidates said that there were only minor problems with the tests, but those had been sorted out. There were even extra computers at the test centres, which could be pressed into service in case candidates faced technical problems.

Many of the centres, however, did not see very many candidates on the first day of the CAT. There were less than 100 students in most of the centres, for each of the sessions. The afternoon sessions were especially poorly attended on Wednesday. At some centres, there were less than 20 candidates in the afternoon session.

It is surmised that after the experience of technical trouble in the test last year, the candidates are more wary this year. “Last year, there were technical problems in the first three days. Candidates don’t want to take any risks this year,” said Shiv Kumar, director, academics, Career Launcher, a coaching institute.

It is expected that a much larger number of candidates will turn up to take the test in the next few days.“It was easy on the whole, except for a few sections. I hope to be ranked well enough to find admission in one of the top colleges,” said Vinay Kumar, a BCom graduate from Thiruvananthapuram who had arrived in Bangalore just for the test. “The paper was tough for first-timers,” said Sushmita Acharjee, a student.

Both Selja and Aamir, the brand ambassador of the tourism ministry for its campaign 'Incredible India' to showcase the country's rich heritage and culture and the message, 'Athithi Devo Bhava' (guest is god) since 2008, are keen that children should learn how to make tourists feel welcome in India, sources told the sources.

According to sources in the ministry's internal publicity unit, the campaign will be launched in Delhi in November, although the dates are yet to be confirmed.

Like the 'Athithi Devo Bhava' advertisements, Aamir will tell children how to imbibe the best tourism practices and also encourage them to spread the welcome message. "The main aim is to attract tourists to India," the official added.

"Hundreds of children will be part of this campaign. After the launch ceremony, the campaign will be taken to various schools in the country. The emphasis is to teach them when they are young so that when they grow up they will be responsible citizens," said the official.

Also, CDs of the eight advertisements of Aamir, who was roped in by former tourism minister Ambika Soni, will also be distributed to schools to popularize the concept. Aamir is not charging anything for the campaign.

In the advertisements, Aamir is shown telling cab drivers and shopkeepers not to misbehave, harass or fleece tourists.

The ministry also plans to bring out advertisements in newspapers. "The advertisements will be jointly signed by the minister and Aamir and they will exhort the people on making India the most sought after destination," the official told the sources.

The aim is also to create a conducive environment for tourists so that they feel safe and secure in India, the official added.

Around 3.8 million tourists have visited India till September this year, a rise of 10 percent as compared to the corresponding month last year. In 2008, 5.28 million tourists came to India as compared to 5.11 million in 2009.

But India wants to improve its tourism figures and hopes to catch up fast with its Asian neighbors like Singapore where 9.7 million visitors came in 2009, a dip of 4.3 percent from 2008. However, reaching China's figure - 55 million in 2007 - is a distant hope.

"Foreigners are attracted by India's exotic destinations as we offer a wide variety of tourism products. We have everything from culture, tradition, exotic locales to food . We just need to make them (tourists) feel comfortable and one sure way is when people make them feel at home. The first step in this direction is teaching the children, who in turn would tell others how to behave with guests," the official added. IANS
