JMI UNIVERSITY – ADMISSION ENTRANCE TEST RESULTS 2010-2011

Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia means ‘National’. The story of its growth from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi—offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialized areas—is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.

PUNE – MSNN ADMISSION 2010 – INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The information age owes its origin to shrinking of devices dimensions. Nature inherently has things operating in nano to femto dimensions. The science of small things and the technology involving the assembly of atoms and molecules to create devices, systems and machines is revolutionizing every sphere of human life in general. Nanotechnology by its nature is interdisciplinary. Chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers all have roles to play in the development and implementation of Nanotechnology. The development includes controlled manipulation of individual molecules and nano-scale structures and their integration into larger material components, systems and architectures. Within these larger scale assemblies the control and construction of their structures and components remains at the nanometer scale. Essential in nanotechnology is to have a direct control of matter either between two nano-objects, or between a micro (or macro )object and a nano-object. This program covers broad range of biological sciences, semiconductor device fabrication to applications in medicine and other spin off applications. The focus of the program will be on theoretical foundation and experimental techniques necessary to pursue scientific investigation in rapidly evolving areas required by young researchers to enter the world of miniaturization.

How to answer common MBA admission questions

While questions asked to you in a business school admission interview may sound easy, your answers are being noted by the panel as an indication of a lot more than you may think. Peter von Loesecke shares tips on how to answer common MBA admission questions.

Why do you want to study at a business school?

This question relates to both your personal and professional goals. Answer in terms of how business school in general can help you achieve both those goals. It is important for you to articulate very clearly what an MBA can do for you, combined with your background. Believe it or not, in my opinion, not many people can answer this question convincingly.

Why did you decide to apply to our business school?

Answer this question in a similar fashion to why business school, but be sure it matches something specific in your personal and professional goals to something the school has. This is the most compelling reason you can provide a school to accept you other than your academic qualifications. The more unique and thought out your answer is, the better your application appears to an admission committee. This question is also not answered well by many students because they do not always give the impression that they have done their homework on the school they are interviewing with. Not being prepared on this question makes your interest in the programme pretty shallow.

What makes you stand out among other candidates?

Reveal to the interviewer something unique about yourself which can be a combination of experiences you have had (academic and professional) that would make you successful at their programme. Your unique experiences are of great interest to schools because they define who you are as a person, how you may contribute in the classroom, how employable you are, and how well you may perform academically.

What can you contribute to our programme?

Answer this question by relating to your strengths and experiences. If you have something very unique in your work experience be sure to mention it and how the school can value it. Also, don’t be shy about how your experience can be of value to the classroom or to team members.

What are your expectations of this programme?

This is a question that should clearly demonstrate you have done your homework about the school and how its strengths will help you achieve your career expectations. If you want to go into real estate for example, be sure to answer in terms of how the programme’s real estate courses will help you achieve your goals. Make sure you research the facts behind your answer or you may come across as not having done your homework.

How do you plan to use your degree?

This is similar to “Why business school?” You need to demonstrate how the degree can improve your chances in a career interest. Make sure your career interests were not researched the morning of the interview. You had better articulate a clear road map to getting where you want to go.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?

This is a hard question and in these times no one can really say where they will be in ten years. However, with a well thought out career plan, make sure you demonstrate your answer is right for you with well researched facts for back up.

Can you walk us through your resume?

This is a question for you to impress the interviewer by going beyond what you did and discuss what you learned and how you grew in that position. Modesty and humility are welcome. False modesty is transparent.
Can you give me an example of a time that you demonstrated leadership?

Give an example how you lead people to overcome barriers in succeeding. Never miss the opportunity to sincerely describe what you learned and how you even failed. Failure teaches many lessons from which you can learn.

What is your definition of teamwork?

I would recommend framing this in terms of a personal experience and not what you think will happen at the business school.

What would you say is your biggest weakness?

Be honest here and do not present a weakness that masquerades as a strength like: “I work too hard and intimidate others” “I am a perfectionist”. These do not work. A better weakness example might be: “I need to improve my communication skills” or “I am not always sensitive to the opinions of others”. Be sure to back them up with examples or you may appear gratuitous. It is perfectly fine if your weaknesses are mentioned in your recommendations, thus all the more important for you to address them in the interview. At least you will demonstrate acknowledging your weaknesses.

How would your colleagues describe you?

Imagine working for yourself and think about all the times you were right and wrong. Then think about the interaction you had with others in those situations and how you may have come across to those that worked with you. Be brutally honest with yourself!

What are your hobbies?

This question can really say something about how you enjoy your free time. This is not a trick question but your activities may say something about your intellectual curiosity. I don’t think business schools are not looking for people with specific hobbies to reject or accept.

UPSC adopts e-gov initiative, encourages online applications

New aptitude test for Class 10 students by CBSE

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that they will soon be introducing a new aptitude test for students of Class 10.

The CBSE had already introduced major changes in its curriculum this year by switching to the grading system instead of marks and implementing the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system instead of the yearly examinations.

The aptitude test that has been developed by the CBSE, called the Students' Global Aptitude Index (SGAI)will be made available to students in all 10,000 schools that are affiliated with the Board. The test aims at helping all students to make a better choice regarding their career.

The first such SGAI test will be conducted on January 15, 2011. A fee of Rs.100 will have to be paid by each student to appear for the aptitude test.

According to CBSE, the test will be two-and-half hour long and will be a paper-pencil test. It would help in determining the scientific, numerical, social, behavioral science and art aptitudes of a student of Class 10.

The SGAI has been customized by the CBSE specifically for Indian students. While conventional aptitude tests help in determining a student's professional orientation, the SGAI test by CBSE will only help in determining the subject orientations of students at the =2 level.

The test would also help students by empowering them with self-knowledge in terms of their aptitude as well as interests so as to help them make the best decision regarding what subjects or stream to pursue after Class 10.

A CBSE circular said that the SGAI intends to reduce the difference between a student's aptitude and interests. This will help in further optimizing a students' potential, enhance satisfaction, increase motivation and also help in reducing wastage of human and financial resources.

The circular further added that the test will also help parents, teachers and students to initiate discussions on various subject choices and the careers they lead to further in life. "Mental preparedness and sincere responses are the pre-requisites for the test. SGAI scores may depend on a student's environmental stimulus and motivational level."

The SGAI test has already been tested on a group of secondary students from around 100 schools affiliated to CBSE across the country. The decision to conduct the test will lie with the schools. CBSE will also be organizing training workshops to familiarize school principals to the new aptitude test.

Adequate steps to provide hassle-free CAT 2010 - Prometric

Kolkata: Global testing and assessment service provider Prometric, which was responsible for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009 - the entrance examination for Indian Institutes of Management and other leading management institutions - Tuesday assured a hassle-free test this year.

CAT 2009 became a disaster after technical glitches and server crashes at several centres across the country.

Prometric said it will upgrade the physical and technical infrastructure of all test centres.

The internal inquiry has revealed that the problem during the last year CAT examination was due to unlicensed software and non-updated antivirus at some test centres,Prometric managing director Soumitro Roy said here at a press meet.

The company has decided to purchase original software licenses and give it to all the test centres. The company is also figuring out hardware of the computers. All external interfaces would be cut during that period, Roy said.

There would be a separately trained team to check and re-check the software and hardware capabilities, said an official.

Roy also said stress is given on security and security checks like thumb impressions and images of candidates would be used while appearing for examination in order to check proxy candidates. IANS

IGNOU to provide English course through Nokia phone

New Delhi: As part of its initiative to integrate modern technology in distance education, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) said on Tuesday it would provide a certificate programme in English through Nokia phone's Ovi Life Tools.

"We will initially start this programme in six districts of Maharashtra. After six months, depending on the response, we will launch it on a national level," IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai told reporters.

IGNOU has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Nokia to provide the programme. It will be in functional English provided mainly through SMS.

"We have entered into an exclusive agreement with Nokia for this programme. This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration to provide English education on a large scale," said Pillai, adding IGNOU might sign a similar deal with other companies to accelerate education growth in the country.

The six-month certificate programme in functional English will begin from January next year. It is divided in three levels - English in daily life, English in education and joining the workforce. It will cost Rs.1,900.

D. Shivakumar, managing director, Nokia India, said the company had taken the initiative to accelerate education growth in the country.

"Nokia's Ovi Life Tools is aimed at bridging information gaps by providing timely and relevant information customized to the user's location, language and personal preferences directly on their mobile devices," said Shivakumar.

Ovi Life Tools, launched by Nokia in June 2009, is a range of services covering agriculture, education and entertainment. It supports 10 Indian languages -- Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and Oriya -- besides English.

Shivakumar said quality English education would be made available to the people living in far-flung areas through Ovi Life Tools as it can work wherever a mobile phone works.

"Education is considered a necessary skill for progress and gateway to a better future. Our association with IGNOU will immensely benefit students through the dissemination of quality educational content," Shivakumar added. IANS

Royal Society of Chemistry opens Bangalore office

Bangalore: The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) opened its fourth international office here on Tuesday, hoping to contribute to "research excellence" and develop deeper scientific links between India and Britain.

"This is a natural extension of our long-standing link with India. As India's remarkable growth as a nation continues, chemistry and related-sciences will play a leading role in developing society, providing innovative solutions for challenges in energy, health, agriculture, climate change and sustainability," RSC Chief Executive Richard Pike said here.

The RSC's office in Bangalore is its third international office after its branches in Beijing, Shanghai and Philadelphia.

Welcoming the opening of the RSC office, British High Commission's knowledge economy counsellor Andrew Jackson said it will play a role in Britain's enhanced relationship with India.

"The RSC will promote a wide range of collaboration with Indian partners, including in areas of research excellence," Jackson said. IANS

IGNOU to open study centres in six European countries

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the largest in the world, will open study centres in six European nations, including Germany and France, to offer personalized courses, its Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai has said.

"We will open our centre in Paris next month. Negotiation is going on with Germany. I hope we will start in Germany by the end of this year. Our target is to open five-six centres in Europe by July 2011," Pillai told the sources.

The Netherlands and Austria are other European countries where IGNOU, the world's largest by student enrollment, is considering to open study centres. It already has a centre in London, the vice chancellor added.

Pillai, who also heads the government's Distance Education Council, said IGNOU would also offer personalized courses in Gandhian studies and some Indian languages such as Sanskrit through its new study centres in Europe, besides the regular courses.

"We are in discussion with several institutes in the US, Australia and Europe to develop personalized courses. It will be done keeping in mind the needs of partner institutes," he said, adding IGNOU's low course fee was hindrance in forging accords overseas.

"Our fee is quite low when you compare it with what is charged by universities in the developed countries. We are planning to restructure the fees for courses offered outside India," Pillai said.

IGNOU has presence in 35 countries through 56 study centres. Over 42,000 students are enrolled at its overseas centres. More than 90 percent of them are the people of India origin.

The vice chancellor said student enrolments at the university have almost trebled in the last four years.

"Now we have 3.2 million active enrollments. It was 1.1 million in 2006. This indicates increasing popularity of distance education," said Pillai, adding the university targets to sustain over 25 percent annual growth in enrollments in the coming years.

IGNOU courses were also becoming increasingly popular in Africa and the Gulf region that has a large strength of India expatriates. "Many African universities have approached us for collaboration. We will help in designing course and study materials."

He said IGNOU will also introduce e-books within six months to increase the popularity of its courses among high-tech students. "We will start with management and IT and gradually introduce it for all the courses. It is cost effective and user friendly."

The university also plans to introduce video-conferencing facilities for all its 56 overseas study centres within a few months. IANS
