CAT Retest in mid January for about 8000 aggrieved students

CAT Retest in mid January for about 8000 aggrieved students. 200,000, took the exam successfully and satisfactorily.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on Wednesday apologised for failing to hold a flawless Common Admission Test (CAT) this year and promised that a retest will be conducted for all aggrieved students in mid-January.

“The IIMs through a CBT (computer based test) based CAT 2009 wished to enhance the quality of exam taking for a large number of candidates by providing them an improved testing environment.

IIMs did not blame the test conducting firm Prometric entirely for the problem. “Its not a capacity problem. I don’t doubt the credibility,” Barua said but added that “their contract with us is always under review. It can fall if we are not satisfied”.

Nearly 242,000 candidates registered for the CAT-2009 but only 216,000 took the test. The IIMs said that while 24,000 aspirants did not show up for the test at all, 2,000 need to give a retest.

But IIMs refused to go back to the pen-pencil format for CAT.

Nursery admission process begins in Delhi

New Delhi: The race for nursery admissions began in the capital on Tuesday with the sale of admission forms in different schools.

Although parents were seen queuing up in front of the schools since early morning, most of them were happy at the uniformity in the schedule thanks to the Delhi government's initiative.

"The mere thought of the nursery admissions were giving me the jitters and I was really tense last night. Having said that I think the process is quite smooth this time. For one the schedule is uniform in all the schools and that is a big relief," said Heena Sachdev, a parent.

According to Sachdev, the fact that a number of schools like Mothers International and Shri Ram school offer the option of downloading the admission form from the internet is a big help.

"A number of schools have online forms which you can either fill and submit online or take a print out and submit manually. Either way, it is of great help. For the school prospectus, however, you have to go to the school," Sachdev said.

Standing in the rain for an hour to collect the admission form from a school in South Delhi, Meenal Das, another parent said, "I have three-four schools in mind for my child and I hope she makes it to one of them. These days' nursery admissions are as competitive as college admissions!"

To bring uniformity in schedules for nursery admissions, the Delhi government has instructed schools to sell forms between December 15 and January 15.

The schools cannot conduct any interview of children or parents as the Delhi High Court has banned such practices.

As per the schedule, the schools will peruse the application forms till January 30 and bring out the first list of successful candidates by February 1.

Sachdev added, "There is a website called www.nurseryadmissions.com which is a boon for parents like us. The registration on the site is free and they keep updating us on all the important dates related to the admissions, the telephone numbers of schools and also the essential documents that we need to have for the process." Nursery admission process begins in Delhi

AIIMS docs to take online exam to teach MD course

New Delhi: Doctors at the premier medical institute of the country, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are now legible to switch over their profession to teach ‘Emergency-Care Medicine’ at the postgraduate level after an online exam.

AIIMS, after its tie-up with the University of South Florida, will get its online exam designed from the varsity.

The doctors first need to qualify the exam to be eligible to teach the students.

Those with post graduation in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, anaesthesia, orthopaedics, pulmonary medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics stand eligible to take the exam.

They can register themselves online from December 15 to 20 along with the submission of MCI registration certificate, a passport size photograph, post graduation certificate with the application form at the AIIMS.

The online test includes 50 multiple-choice questions and a minimum score of 70% is mandatory to clear the first stage of the examination.

The final exam will be held on October 5 each year, where the candidate will have to answer 200 multiple-choice questions and needs a score of 175 to qualify.

The doctors after clearing the exam are also eligible for a year-long development programme.

The ‘Emergency-Care Medicine’ programme is a specialized branch of medicine of the Medical Council of India (MCI) recognized as recently as July 22, 2009, as a distinct entity.

The course will be introduced for the first time in the country at the postgraduate level from the next academic session.

The resolution to approve the decision had already been passed by the standing finance committee of the institute and it has decided to allocate three seats for MD residency in emergency medicine.

Like for other branches, the institute’s entrance exam at the all India level will be the qualifying exam for emergency medicine as well.

The Christian Medical College, Vellore and Guwahati Medical College are the only medical institutions to apply for a separate department in emergency medicine apart from AIIMS.

“Unlike in the UK and the US, where Emergency medicine is an integral part of the acute trauma care procedure, it is yet to receive its due as a distinct entity in India,” said Dr. M.C Misra, Chief, AIIMS trauma centre.

CAT fiasco - IIM Directors meet, to continue with online mode

New Delhi: Glitches, trouble, anxiety, pressure, all this and much more mounted both the students and examinees during the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009. But in spite of all hurdles, the Directors of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have decided to stick to the online version with no re-tests this year.

An IIM Director, who wished to remain anonymous, felt that, "It will be un-manageable for the institute to plunge back to the conventional paper-pencil format as it will not be a feasible option keeping in view the number of aspirants appearing for it."

All the Directors recently held a meeting in Mumbai to discuss the issue of the CAT-2009 fiasco.

While the directors met to discuss the fate of online exams, they also included Prometric, the US based agency that conducted the test this year, in their talks but are not too sure to continue with its services.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has also called a meeting of the Directors of IIMs on Wednesday to discuss the problem that thousands of students faced due to technical glitches in the CAT earlier this month.

A concrete decision to continue with the online format is to be announced there.

Virus attacks and problematic servers created uproar among the aspirants in the country and some of them still await their chance to appear for the same.

The IIMs are however, sure that the admission schedule will not be affected even after such a blunder and the results will be declared on January 22, 2010.

"Those who were unable to appear for the test this year will be re-scheduled. Talking about the threats to file a case in court -- there’s nothing new in it as it even existed during the paper-pencil format," said another Director.
