Mr. Tejendra Khanna, Lt. Governor, Delhi and Chancellor of GGSIPU bestowed degrees on 19 Ph.D. scholars, on the occasion.

Applauding the University, he said, "It is a matter of pride that in a short span of 10 years, GGSIPU has made a mark for itself at a national and international level".

In addition, 216 students of Master of Technology (M.Tech.) were conferred their degrees and one student, Ms. Shruti Gupta, MCA was given the award for 'Exemplary Performance' by the Vice Chancellor.

The highlight of this year's Convocation was the award of degrees to 18 foreign students, who have successfully completed their 'Master's in Human Resource Planning & Development' programme, offered by the Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), in affiliation with the University.

These students belong to different countries like Maldives, Sudan, Nepal, Malawi, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Lesotho, Cambodia, Bhutan, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Dominica.

Among the foreign students, the 'University's Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit' was conferred on Mr. Wakhungu Patrick Juma from Kenya, who also received the 'Institute's President's Medal and Certificate of Merit'.

IGNOU to establish three research, development centres

New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon establish three national level institutions including the IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education Training (IIVET), IGNOU Institute for Professional Competency and Advancement of Teachers (IIPCAT) and North-East Centre for Research and Development (NECRD).

The announcement was made by Prof. Omprakash Mishra, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IGNOU.

Announcing this Prof. Mishra said, "For now, we plan that the NECRD be developed to be a think-tank. 25 students of Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTAs) have been appointed who could pursue their PhDs and at the same time contribute to the extension and outreach activities of the university in the North East Region."

Prof. Mishra also informed that a lot of activities have bee planned by the varsity for educational development in the North-East region.

IGNOU has been a leading active player in education delivery in the region.

Hundreds of Study Centres have been established by IGNOU in North-Eastern Region to spread education among residents. These efforts are being further complemented by institution building in areas which have generally not got the importance they deserved.

The new initiatives in eight regional centres have ensured a quantum jump in the activity of IGNOU which promises to bring in the educational development of North-East states.

IGNOU will also establish a new Regional Centre at Guwahati to supplement the existing one.

Institutions for Agriculture and Extension Work in Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will also be established by the varsity.

Government to set up institute to combat droughts, floods

New Delhi: The union cabinet on Thursday approved the setting of a National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management that will develop technologies to combat droughts, extreme temperatures, floods and salinity - which threaten agriculture.

To be located in Malegaon in Maharashtra, the institute's mandate will be to pioneer research and ensure that these technologies when put in practice will lead to adaptation of crops, livestock, horticulture and fisheries to such stresses, said a cabinet note. Most of the environmental stresses are being caused by climate change.

"Abiotic stresses like drought, temperature extremes, flood, salinity, material toxicity and nutritive deficiency are threatening agricultural production globally," the statement said.

"India being a tropical country faces such abiotic stresses to a significant degree which has implications for maintaining national food security."

It is proposed that the institute, which will have a deemed university status, will carry out research programmes through four schools - schools of drought stress management, atmospheric stress management, edaphic stress management and policy support research. IANS

Hope and jobs for students at Delhi University's job fair

New Delhi: At a time jobs are becoming scarce and pink slips the order of the day with the global meltdown, there is reason to cheer. Delhi University's newly-launched Central Placement Cell has provided jobs to at least 200 undergraduate students with major companies, including IT major Wipro, pharma giant Ranbaxy and BPO major Genpact.

The first phase of recruitment took place between Dec 8 and 10 in which around 154 students got employment. The second phase, which began Jan 21 and ended on Tuesday, ensured jobs to 45 applicants, while 440 short-listed students are awaiting results of their applications.

"Around 4,564 students from 48 colleges participated in this job fair in which around 200 students have been ensured good position in top companies. The response of the students was good," Seema M. Parihar, chairperson of the university's Central Placement Cell (CPC), told sources.

Eight reputed companies like Wipro, Ranbaxy, Genpact, Dell, ITC, Barclays, ATS and pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly participated.

The CPC was launched in September last year with a view to provide opportunity to students of less known and off-campus colleges.

The university authorities were delighted with the new initiative. "There has been overwhelming response from the students, who also felt encouraged after getting a good job. It has equally benefited the companies that came for the recruitment," said S.K. Vij, Dean students' welfare.

Students were happy with the job fair and the opportunities.

"After the global crisis we did not think we would be able to find employment so easily. Till now we have been getting news of retrenchments from everywhere, but the CPC of the university has come as a great help," said Vinod Mehra, a student of Aurobindo College.

Company officials also felt satisfied that they were able to find the right candidates easily.

"Getting a suitable candidate is not easy, but in such events we get an opportunity to interact with a large number of applicants, who can be scanned in a proper and convenient manner. The applicants were also cooperative," said an official of IT giant Wipro.

"We expect the number of students and recruiters to increase manifold the next time. We will approach more companies to join this recruitment process," Parihar said.

She said the eligibility criteria for students to enrol in the CPC was "any final year student from any course with at least 60 percent marks in Class 12".

Every company held its own scanning process through written tests, interviews and group discussions at the job fair.

Earlier, the companies would visit only the well-known colleges for campus recruitments but the CPC has ensured recruitment of students from any college, Parihar said.

"It was our effort to ensure that placements are purely on the basis of merit and not on the brand value of a college," said Vij.

"We could never think of joining such placements earlier, as companies would not visit our college. But now it's nice to see that we too have an opportunity to at least participate in the process of recruitment," said Aditya Sharma, student of Ram Lal Anand College. IANS

Study in France

French higher education is well renowned for its quality and accessibility. The country has an excellent educational system that provides diplomas, degrees, and certificates having international recognition. The country has nearly 400 internationally renowned educational institutions for higher education and research. Moreover, the system of accreditation also ensures that there is never a dearth of quality education. Admission and promotion is based on merit. Therefore, brilliant students stand a good chance of pursuing their educational goals irrespective of their financial or social background.

The country is also known for its industrial and economic expertise. Besides, a well-developed public transport, excellent heath care, and a safe political environment also make the country popular among the students who wish to pursue higher education in the country. It is also well known that given an option more people prefer France than any other destination in the world for higher education.

One of the most striking features of French higher education is the small size of its educational establishments. These establishments though specialize in a range of study programmes. Also, there is a huge presence of higher educational institutions in the country. Even small cities could be having two or three universities and a number of engineering and other specialized higher education establishment. Capital Paris and the suburbs have a total of 13 universities, and a number of other educational institutions. So there is never a dearth of quality higher educational institutions in the country.

One striking feature of the French education system is the low tuition fees in the country as the expenses for higher education are funded by the state. The tuition fees ranges from €150 to €400 depending on the university and the level of education. Another uniqueness of french higher education is that most scientific research is carried out by designated research institutes and not by the universities. Education gets huge importance in the country. The government spends almost 20 percent of its annual budget on education.

Also, a major reform is underway in the French education system, which, besides changing several other features, also aims to standardize the time-frame according to the European standards: three year’s for bachelor’s degree, two for master’s degree, and three for the doctorate.

In order to aid the students who are planning to study in France, here are some links, which are mentioned below. These links will help a student understand France better and also know more about the colleges and universities in France.
